Last Sunday, we hosted our annual Remembrance Day event at Ibrox, commemorating those who gave their lives for their country. Rangers Football Club were proud to welcome a number of veterans associated with Ipswich Town FC to the stadium, accompanied by former Rangers and Ipswich Town captain, Terry Butcher, as part of the Medals2Matches initiative. As well as representatives from Poppyscotland and each branch of the services. For Terry Butcher, supporting our armed forces, veterans, and their families is a cause that holds deep personal meaning. His son, Christopher Butcher, served in the Royal Artillery in Afghanistan and tragically passed away aged just 35. Westminster has badly underestimated our veterans. These are not bourgeois politicians playing war games. They are working-class lads from towns and villages across Britain who put their lives on the line for this country. Behind them stand their families, their communities, and the silent majority that still believes in duty, honour and patriotism. And Westminster would be wise to remember one thing: Our Armed Forces swear their oath to the Monarch. Not politicians. Tomorrow at 7pm, I sit down with Ex-Para Lieutenant Colonel Simon Barry as he gives us the true story behind the government’s pursuit of our veterans.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Andy Burnham Andy Burnham and I met with Ukrainian and British sailors in Portsmouth. They had just completed the multinational Sea Breeze exercises together. It is very important that our units have demonstrated a high level of preparedness in maritime demining. Our country is drawing ever closer to the NATO countries, and there is no doubt that our Navy – and the Armed Forces as a whole – are contributing to our shared security in Europe through their knowledge and skills. I thank our warriors for their service and professionalism. I am grateful to the United Kingdom and to all our partners for their support.

On this Vietnam Veterans’ Day, may we grasp the historical context and reasons why Australia sent forces to Vietnam. For when we do, we do three things: We shine a light on the ignorance of today’s protesters. We remember the meaning behind the suffering and sacrifice of Australians who served in Vietnam. Speaking in the WH debate earlier this week on the prosecution of Northern Ireland veterans: the Govt cannot proceed unless they are able categorically to clarify that legislation will protect veterans from the vexatious pursuit that has been so much in their minds and worries throughout this period. If we cannot give them that—if the Govt cannot legislate for that—then there is no purpose in getting rid of the existing Act. The Govt may not like it, but they must face this reality: there cannot be pursuit of veterans if previous inquiries have cleared them of whatever the charge was before. This repeat process that has been taking place, on absolutely no evidence whatever, is what has caused all the worry for our veterans. If we care about our veterans, we should not rush to change the existing legislation until we can confirm protection for these brave men and women who served their country so loyally, on behalf of civilians in Northern Ireland. If we cannot find a solution, it is ours and the Govt’s duty not to tamper with what exists, for fear of destroying the one protection we have given those veterans.

My family and I celebrated #VeteransDay today at the Condor Squadron where I was honored to be inducted a member. Thank you for this honor. Veterans Day is always special. On this day we stop to honor those in uniform, who serve us in America’s Armed Forces – who understand freedom, honor, duty, and what it means to defend our country. Without these Americans and their supportive families, we would have no freedoms. America’s way of life is challenged every day, and defended every day. So, today, we say thank you, and I say thank you to all our veterans. For myself, I graduated West Point in 1951, third in my class, and headed for Korea. By God’s grace, I shot down two MIG-15s and got back home… began supporting space activities in the US Air Force, eventually travelled to the moon with Neil and Mike. For all of that, I am grateful – especially to the veterans I served with. But the message I want to leave you with today is forward looking. We need to keep teaching our history, what it means to be a veteran, how important that job is. Freedom rests on what Shakespeare called “the happy few,” those who know what freedom and sacrifice mean, who rise when they are called, who step up, and who believe in the ideas that have gotten us to this point, freedom, honor, duty, and selfless service. Today marks an important step forward for equality. I am proud to be introducing a Bill in the Assembly to ban so‑called “conversion therapy” in Northern Ireland. These cruel, archaic and harmful practices have no place in our society. No one should face harm or coercion because of who they are or who they love. This legislation is about protecting LGBTQ+ people from abuse and ensuring that everyone is respected, included, and treated with dignity. Together, we can build a fair, shared and equal society for everyone. 🌈

This is the day the Lord has made and we will rejoice and be glad in it. The victory at the Supreme Court was not just one for the PDP but for the people of Plateau State. We must not behave like the ten lepers, we must return quickly and give praise to God who made it possible. This service was held in remembrance of our Fallen Heroes. We want to thank God for those Great men and women who devoted themselvess to the service of the nation. Unfortunately, we have not done well in looking after those who have served the nation appropriately, And I am praying that as a nation, we will do better in looking after those who have served the nation valiantly. For those of you who are still serving, we want to encourage you to continue to devote yourselves to the best of your conscience and ability to protect lives and properties. As an institution, the armed forces are very crucial and central to the survival of every nation, and I must admit, like every institution in Nigeria, things have not been well. As a government, we will continue to provide the necessary tools and enabling environment for the Armed Forces to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities of protecting the lives and property of citizens in the State. I will continue to advocate that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces will insist on the return to true professionalism within the armed forces and the security agencies, and I am sure when we begin that journey, it will be worthwhile.

Some died in the course of battle, some died as a result of injuries sustained in the course of protecting the nation, and they left their loved ones behind. As an institution, the armed forces are very crucial and central to the survival of every nation, and I must admit, like every institution in Nigeria, things have not been well. As a government, we will continue to provide the necessary tools and enabling environment for the Armed Forces to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities of protecting the lives and property of citizens in the State. We will continue to honor our fallen heroes who sacrificed for our nation’s security.

I thank the warriors of the Unmanned Systems Forces and the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, and our intelligence agencies for their accuracy. I was at the National Mosque, Abuja, earlier today, where I joined the congregation in prayers for our fallen heroes as the nation prepares to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. Our prayers shall continue to be with the families of members of our Armed Forces who paid the supreme price to make our nation safer. In these solemn moments, we remember that sacrifice with deep appreciation. Indeed, the role our Armed Forces played and continue to play in keeping our nation safe and safeguarding the territorial integrity of our dear country cannot be overemphasised. We remain eternally grateful. May their service to the nation and the sacrifices they made never be in vain. I also had the pleasure of attending the wedding fatiha of the daughter of my late friend, the Ex CG of Customs, Alhaji Ahmed Hamma Kojoli, at the same venue. I congratulate the couple and wish them a happy home. -AA
