Cost-sensitivity cuts both ways though, a cheap-enough open model also kills the switching cost that locks you into one vendor's roadmap. If agents are picking on price, providers lose the "nobody rips out infra that's already wired in" moat, not just the margin. Watched a team drop a paid API for a 7B open model mid-project last year purely on latency, and nobody blinked.
