The hatred for President Trump has gone too far. The Senators and Congressmen who made a video suggesting our men and women in the military do not have to follow unlawful orders have yet to show us an example. They owe it to our men and women in the military to be specific about orders issued by President Trump or those under his command that they believe to be unlawful.

When elected officials who have authority over the military tell service members to brace for “unlawful orders,” it crosses a legal line. Federal law is clear. 18 U.S.C. 2387 prohibits influencing or undermining the loyalty, morale, or discipline of the armed forces. President Trump has not issued a single unlawful order. They cannot name one. So putting out a video like that only creates doubt inside the ranks, and that is the last place you want confusion or instability. Members of Congress and Senators do not get to hide behind free speech while weakening the chain of command. Their positions come with responsibility. What they did was not about democracy. It was politics aimed at the military, and it crossed a line the Founders warned about.

Tim Sheehy, the Navy SEAL senator, called her out on hypocrisy. He reminded her she’s been pushing the idea that troops should defy orders they think are illegal, yet she was demanding Hegseth blindly follow her line of questioning and admit something damaging. He basically told her a combat veteran doesn’t need lectures on duty or manhood from someone trying to score political points by undermining the military’s chain of command. According to the clips, she looked pretty uncomfortable and hid her face while he laid into her double standard. Last November, Slotkin organized a video with five other Democratic lawmakers who had military or intelligence backgrounds. They spoke directly to active-duty troops and intelligence officers, telling them the biggest threat to the Constitution right now is coming from inside the country, not abroad. They said, quote, “You can refuse illegal orders… You must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution.” It came right after concerns about how the Trump administration was using the military domestically. Sheehy and others called it out as trying to undermine the chain of command and encourage troops to second-guess lawful orders from their commander-in-chief. What Slotkin said was was poor judgment, and from a American standpoint, it’s seen as undermining a Republican president before he even gave an order. She was reckless and partisan with the troops.
