Over the last 20 years, there has been a push in youth sports to spend any and all available practice time on developing specific sport skills at the expense of developing all-around athleticism. You would think that, with all this specialized practice in one sport, we would be seeing a generation of superstars. In fact, it’s just the opposite: Injury and burnout rates are at an all-time high. I have seen young athletes as young as 8-9 years old competing at a regional and national level for their perspective sports, and yet they cant do basic things like : 1. Balance on one leg 2. Complete an honest pushup 3. Never learned to fall correctly. Amazingly these skills don't require special training. Proper general movement training can go a long way toward helping improve overall athleticism. Movement sessions for children should be fun, engaging, challenging, and most importantly, semi-organized. One of the biggest causes of ACL, overuse and other injuries we see in our female soccer players is this: Not having a load management plan and adding random conditioning on top of practice. ‼️When there are huge spikes in workload that increases injury risk. If you feel you have to punish your players with runs to build toughness, you have the wrong definition of mental toughness. Mental toughness is being disciplined with the basics, being diligent with how you plan training, focusing on QUALITY outputs, and ensuring your players can last the long game and stay healthy. For macro conditioning of the player, there must be a plan in place with practice design and small sided games. Coaches add extra conditioning based on their feelings and not objective data. This puts the players at a major risk for injury when load is mis managed. There is so much more to be said here, so I'll say this: Adding extra conditioning also makes players fear you. Why do you want to be feared? The culture should be more about respect and discipline with doing what is right for one's health.

My #SundayShare is a breaking lines practice. Teams locked in zones look for opening for penetrative pass to a teammate for a point (waist high limit on passes). If intercepted, the other team tries the same. Coaching points: · Positioning: to receive both on half turn (in own area) and square to receive penetrative pass. · Scanning: where are the gaps? · Receiving: controlling with good first touch. · Movement: to receive and offset opponents. · Technique: firm push pass with follow through. · Deception: feint pass. Progressions: (1) players on two touches; (2) first time penetrative pass = 2; (3) after two passes, one opponent can enter the quarter for a 1 v 3. Roy Keane: “It’s just an act…” 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 Below is perhaps one of the most insightful clips I’ve watched related to the psychology of adult elite sport (the professional level of sport). Tucked away…silently…in a BBC interview quite some years ago. A small section of an interview with Roy Keane, one of the Premier League’s greatest players… “It’s an act. Of course I had self-doubts, but I kept an act up. The skinhead. A few sendings off. I fear nothing. Some sort of machine. Which is nonsense. You act, don’t you!” Roy Keane was a great actor. He acted when he took to the pitch. He had, what I call a ‘Game Face’. I wrote about my mental technique of ‘Game Face’ in my first book Soccer Tough (a book that I’m proud to say Gareth Bale called life changing). And I expanded on ‘Game Face’ in Soccer Tough II. A ‘Game Face’ is a term I use to describe a player’s best ‘mental state’ and ideal ‘competitive persona’. It’s a pictorial metaphor that helps players think about, imagine, and then self-regulate around who they want to be in the heat of battle and how they want to execute their actions. “I’m my Game Face no matter what. I say it, be it, do it, act it…embody it, enact it” To bring this alive I’ll provide some examples… I spent five years working with someone considered one of the best defenders in the world. He had a ‘Game Face’ of ‘Dominant & Relentless’. These last two years working with Feyenoord as they won the Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup, one of the players had a ‘Game Face’ of ‘Positive Upbeat Benzema’ When England played in the final of the rugby World Cup in 2019, one of the players had a ‘Game Face’ of ‘Aggressive Energetic Lion’ (I was lead psych prior to the World Cup). You see, these are pictorial metaphors consisting of action-based words, often combined with a model player or concept such as an animal. Metaphors are wonderful linguistic tools for self-regulation, and can help human beings execute actions at a high intensity level, as well as engage in a competition with approach behaviour (on the front-foot, energy forward). Ultimately, sports competitors would do well to be great actors when they need to be. This doesn’t mean there’s anything inauthentic about their style of play. On the contrary, a ‘Game Face’ is robust in that it offers a description of ‘who they are’ and ‘who they need to be’ when kick-off arrives. It offers a dynamic descriptor of ‘who they are’ and ‘who they need to be’ in-game when the pressure is on. A ‘Game Face’ is a mix of authentic and inauthentic mental (and personality) states that enable players to adapt and flex when they need to. Roy Keane had a ‘Game Face’. He was an actor when he needed to be. In his words, it helped him find ‘the zone’. A ‘Game Face’ is the most powerful technique I’ve devised over the years…one that enables me to help players take charge of themselves and take control no matter what. So much to love about Garrison Rippa game winning field goal last night for Jacksonville State! He had never attempted a field goal or extra point in college. It was Jacksonville State’s first bowl win ever in their first year as an FBS program. BUT… What stood out the most to me was his pre-kick routine: - Breathwork to control his emotions and lock in on the present-moment. Many athletes take their breath for granted, but the best of the best utilize the power of it. - Feeding his mind powerful thoughts with his self-talk. He kept telling himself over and over “you were built for moments like this.” If players don’t take control of their self-talk in moments like this a lot of times they’ll start to think about what they DON’T WANT TO HAPPEN such as “don’t miss it!”, rather than what they DO WANT TO HAPPEN such as “I’m nailing this!” I don’t know what his final thought was right before the kick but I’m sure it was super powerful and positive. As Derek Jeter says, “The last thing you think is the first thing you do.” Quote from Rippa after the game: “There's a picture of me on ESPN with my head against the wall just like I was just breathing,” Rippa said. “I was just trying to tell myself, you know you prepared for this. All the hours outside of practice, all the hours in practice, been doing a lot. My teammates, they put me in a position to win, and I made it happen. When I had the pleasure and honour of working with Arne at Feyenoord we used to talk a lot about helping players manage their energy - both physical and mental. Attention Intensity Intent In the model I use with coaches, intensity is mental energy. I used to talk to Arne a lot about players competing with an optimal level of mental energy (to complement the physical intensity that’s critical for the game). Arne being Arne - he was always open to my suggestions around managing and optimising energy. For me, in this video Arne is talking about the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘enjoyment’. Activities aren’t always ‘fun’ but players tend to enjoy difficult. They tend to enjoy the challenge. Mike Tomlin’s most underrated moment? I’m not sure if a lot of people remember this but when Mike Tomlin was a rookie head coach he was so obsessed with practice that he nearly doubled the amount of two-a-days that the Steelers usually had. Ed Bouchette even did an entire piece on this at the time. It was also one of the longest training camps the Steelers had. But after the team faded at the end of 2007, Tomlin blamed himself when most head coaches would likely stay the course and force his players to get used the rigorous schedule. For any fans of Steelers history, staying such a course would likely bring to mind Bill Austin. But Tomlin did what Austin didn’t. He changed his practice schedule. Changed how he approached training camp. Changed what he personally focused on during practice. If you recall, he focused an unnatural length of time on special teams during his 2007 practices but, in 2008, he learned to trust his ST coach. Mike Tomlin’s most underrated moment? I’m not sure if a lot of people remember this but when Mike Tomlin was a rookie head coach he was so obsessed with practice that he nearly doubled the amount of two-a-days that the Steelers usually had. Ed Bouchette even did an entire piece on this at the time. It was also one of the longest training camps the Steelers had. But after the team faded at the end of 2007, Tomlin blamed himself when most head coaches would likely stay the course and force his players to get used the rigorous schedule. For any fans of Steelers history, staying such a course would likely bring to mind Bill Austin. But Tomlin did what Austin didn’t. He changed his practice schedule. Changed how he approached training camp. Changed what he personally focused on during practice. If you recall, he focused an unnatural length of time on special teams during his 2007 practices but, in 2008, he learned to trust his ST coach. The Clippers used to have a tradition during practice where players who airballed had to run a lap. This rule was established by Brian Shaw and applied to every player, regardless of their status. However, recently, Kawhi Leonard broke this rule and now, according to Paul George, no one has to run when they airball. In a recent episode of the Podcast P with Paul George, George and Terance Mann discussed this situation and found it hilarious. As a fan, I found this DISTURBING and it perfectly sums up the current state of the team. As a dedicated Clippers fan, I have noticed a lack of effort and passion on the court year after year. When I heard about this incident, it all clicked for me. This team will NEVER win a championship because they are led by someone who doesn't prioritize a winning culture. It's clear that Kawhi cannot lead us to a championship, and neither can PG. By disrespecting the coaches and refusing to run, Kawhi has set a precedent for the rest of the team to also disrespect their coaches. This behavior is reflected in their lackluster performance on the court, with the worst body language in the league and severe lack of fire and passion. Championship teams have strong practice habits and are led by players who not only push themselves, but also push their teammates to be better. In contrast, Popovich was known for being toughest on Tim Duncan, which motivated the rest of the team to also push themselves. Michael Jordan would press his teammates in practice, cussing them out, being physical with them, and create a harsh environment. Knowing that if they could survive him during practice then it would make the games easier. Kobe Bryant once took away his teammates’ Kobe brand shoes because he believed they didn't deserve to wear them after playing poorly. He would workout with his teammates so hard they often would black out. Unfortunately, Kawhi has created a culture of complacency and lack of accountability in the Clippers' locker room, which has translated onto the court. If the Clippers want to be a winning team, they need to establish good habits in practice and have players/coaches who push themselves and their teammates to be the best they can be. It's time for a change in the Clippers' culture if they want to have a chance at the championship. When we likely flame out early in the playoffs Steve Ballmer please clean house, us fans are tired of paying our hard earned money to watch guys play 50% and get blown out by mediocre teams. Then make podcasts laughing about goofing off in practice.
