We’re stepping up in the world to lift trade and create jobs back home, but we can only have prosperity if we have security, too. That’s why with today’s launch of the Defence Capability Plan we are making big investments in defence, including $12b of new spending over the next four years.

The Conservatives will increase defence spending. Our allies, and our enemies, are rearming more quickly and more effectively than we are. We cannot afford to be left behind under this Labour Government. We are the only party with a clear plan and a clear path to raising defence spending to 3.0% of GDP. You can be a warfare economy or a welfare economy, but you can’t be both, as Labour are finding out. Restoring the two-child benefit cap would save £3.2 billion, with half being spent on reducing the deficit, and £1.6 billion on increasing the defence budget. Coupled with our policy to repurpose the national wealth fund to bolster defence with £11 billion from net zero energy projects and £6 billion from cutting central research and development grants, we would establish a new national defence and resilience bank. Labour won’t commit to reaching 3.0% this Parliament. By the time the Defence Investment Plan is published it will be getting on for a year late. We’ve not seen the Defence Finance and Investment Strategy that’s due, nor the Defence Industrial Recapitalisation Plan. Kemi Badenoch will deliver on defence. Deterrence is cheaper than war, but weakness is the most expensive policy of all.

Ukraine is turning the tide of the war, and we are helping them, including by advancing the unblocking of €6.6 billion through the European Peace Facility. If Europe wants to be a geopolitical actor, we need to be more strategic in our external action. At today’s Development Council, we will discuss how Europe can better align aid, trade, security, and defence partnerships with both the development needs of our partners and our own strategic interests. Global Gateway investments must focus where they can have the greatest impact, and where countries align with our interests. If a partner country supports Russia or Iran, our engagement has to remain flexible so we can realign accordingly. My press remarks ↓

Danish military expert Anders Nielsen explains why it is so important to invest money into Ukrainian weapons production. I have been constantly saying this for a long time: It is very important that Ukraine produces its own weapons and has the necessary funding to do so. According to the Economist, today, the Ukrainian arms industry has orders worth $7 billion, which is only about a third of its potential capacity. According to my data, the capacity could be even higher. Arms companies from the United States and some European countries have already gotten involved in this process; others should do so as well. Production of Ukrainian weapons is faster and cheaper than Western weapons. Domestic weapons can be more innovative. They are immediately tested in real conditions. Production cycles are much shorter. For example, there are approximately 250 drone manufacturing companies in Ukraine, some of which are world leaders. The whole world has seen recent very effective strikes on large arms depots in Russia.

Nation's defence comes first and foremost and if Indian Air Force or Indian forces have to ride on this aatmaribharta, it is only possible if everyone - from DRDO, to DPSU, to the private industry holds the hand and takes us to that path and don't let us deviate from that path. Because when it comes to national defence, there will be compulsions to deviate from their path in case we do not get the things that we need or the kind of system and weaponry that is required to survive in today's world. So, my humble request to each one of us here is that let's put a system in place where we are helping each other out in achieving the overall goal, which are our goals. It is not anybody else's...If we have to defend the nation, it is everybody's job. It is not just the job of a person in uniform..."

An idea that I can't stop thinking about: The Capability Gap Alabama coach Nick Saban refers to the Capability Gap in this clip from a discussion with Holly Rowe: “We oftentimes talk about what someone’s potential is, but I think to put it in better terms...the Capability Gap is what you’re capable of relative to what you’re doing...if you understand the truth about that, you can actually take information that can help you close that gap.” The Capability Gap is a simple idea with powerful implications for every area of your life. It requires understanding two things: 1. Your full capability 2. Your current delivery In my experience, most people underestimate their full capability and overestimate their current delivery. In other words, they think their Capability Gap is small, when in reality, it’s much larger than they realize. That’s why having mentors, coaches, friends, and family who help you see the truth about your full capability and keep you honest about your current delivery is everything. This isn’t about sports. This is about life: Do you have people who help you think bigger about what you’re capable of? Do you have people who tell you when your current delivery isn’t good enough? We all need those people. The ones who push us to get uncomfortable, to stretch our thinking, and to raise our standards. We need people who help us become better partners, parents, friends, colleagues, and leaders. During the last two days, the 32 Allies of #NATO met in the Chiefs of Defence format in Brussels, to discuss our unified military approach to the security developments of our time. Through SACEUR’s assessment of readiness, deterrence and defence, and SACT’s views on near and far future, we communicate to our citizens and the rest of the world that we are ready for the present and we are prepared for whatever lies on the horizon. Our focus on partnerships, from across the globe, also demonstrates our understanding that our security is global and interconnected, and #NATO must reflect on this reality. And our support for #Ukraine through initiatives like NSATU, JATEC and PURL, continues to grow, showing that our unity and determination are more than words. From our discussions, three main conclusions stand out: We are #united. We are #resilient. We are #dynamic, as we #adapt succesfully, while we #deter effectively! #StrongerTogether #SlavaUkraïni
