Did anyone else get 2OO1 vibes from this part of the recently-released Unification film? This was my favorite moment: TOS Shatner/Kirk in particular looks great, and the scene reminds me of the end of the Kubrick classic where Dave Bowman meets his other selves…

The whole film by @OTOY is available here: I have mixed feelings about rendering actors, which feels uncanny, but the fact that it has Shatner’s blessing is good enough for me…

The aesthetic, the ambient sound design, and music all very much follow the fashions of the current moment, so in that sense it does not feel like vintage Trek to me, but it’s hard not to get excited seeing Captain Kirk again!

Las thing on this: does anyone know who all those people at the fountain are? I know Robin Curtis as Saavik of course, but am I supposed to recognize the others? It would’ve been fun to see other TOS guest stars and characters who had passed in there.

Definitely 2001 vibes. And Gary Lockwood at the top also leans into the feeling.

Good connection!

That middle section with the 3 Kirks blew me away. The TOS Kirk sold me on using something like this in like Starfleet Academy. Like a Kirk training video on the Holodeck or something.

It’s heresy, I know, but if they used this tech to make new old-school Trek episodes, with that 1966 first season vibe… I would watch them until my eyes fell out

Seeing TOS Kirk in this thing has completely blown my mind. I’ve seen deep fakes before, even really good ones, but whatever this is, it is on a whole other level. I grew up with that Kirk. I know him better than family members. That’s *him*. Hats off to Sam Witwer & the FX crew.

Very 2001! Admiral Kirk protecting the brash young adventurous Kirk from proceeding thru the opening, “This is not your path to take, now”, then both clearing the final journey of the one who is…

The short also starts with Frank Poole. 😉
