“Can the Chief Secretary explain who did oversee the due diligence and vetting process?” When I asked Darren Jones in February who oversaw the vetting process for the appointment of Peter Mandelson if it wasn’t Morgan McSweeney he stated that it was “the propriety and ethics team in the Cabinet Office, by the Foreign Office and by all the normal, appropriate authorities”. It simply isn’t credible that the only person who knew of the vetting failure was Olly Robbins if all the normal, appropriate authorities oversaw the process. Robbins is the scapegoat. Are we honestly to believe that Keir Starmer, David Lammy, Yvette Cooper, Dan Jarvis, Nick Thomas-Symonds or Darren Jones never once saw the official outcome of Mandelson’s vetting?
