On this #WorldOceanDay we must pause and hear the deep cries echoing from the bottom of our oceans,not silent anymore, but rising in revolt against the choking grip of pollution. Oceans cover 75% of Earth, hold 97% of its water, absorb 23% of CO₂, and support over 50% of global biodiversity yet they being dumped with trash around the world. In Tamil Nadu we are on a mission to to do our best to restore degraded islands, seagrass meadows, corals and mangroves which in turn will protect highly endangered Dugongs, Seahorses,Turtles and millions of other species. So far we have restored 18 acres of seagrass beds, 8 acres of corals including Kasuvar Island, planted 2403 Ha of new Mangroves and restored 1207 Ha of degraded Mangroves. Elephants, gaurs, deer and countless other species are returning to areas once overrun by invasive plants as the TN Forest Department, GOTN continues one of India’s largest ecosystem restoration efforts. More than 40,000 hectares of Forests have been restored, including nearly 31,000 hectares cleared of lantana. The true measure of success, however, is not the number of hectares cleared but the return of life. Landscapes once choked by invasive species are witnessing the revival of native habitats, with large mammals and ground-nesting birds reclaiming these restored spaces. The removed biomass is converted into briquettes. Around 120 MT of briquettes have been supplied to local tea factories creating a circular climate solution This pioneering initiative advances two global goals simultaneously: biodiversity recovery through ecosystem restoration and climate action through sustainable carbon management. While visiting the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, I lowered my underwater camera beneath the bridge connecting Nassau and Paradise Island to see what was hiding below the surface, and it didn't disappoint. The bridge pilings were covered with life, from colorful parrotfish, queen angelfish, blue tangs, butterflyfish, grunts, and squirrelfish to plenty of other fascinating reef species. In this narrated video, I identify many of the fish I encountered and share some interesting facts about their behavior and the important role they play in the reef ecosystem. Come explore the underwater world beneath one of the Bahamas' busiest bridges and discover the amazing marine life that most visitors never know is there. Tamil Nadu is on a Mission to create new Mangrove forests & restore degraded ones.Through strategic afforestation & ecosystem revival efforts, the state is reinforcing its natural coastal defense and fostering biodiversity through Green TN Mission. New Mangrove forests have been planted in 5,937.9 acres while restoration of degraded Mangroves forests has been done in 3,539 acres across 10 districts, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram,Thoothukudi and Chennai. PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD CONFIRMS EXTENSIVE MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE IN AREAS FREQUENTED BY CHINESE MARITIME MILITIA The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) fully supports and confirms the report released by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command (WESCOM), exposing the severe damage inflicted upon the marine environment and coral reef in the seabed of Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal. From 09 August 2023 to 11 September 2023, PCG monitored an average presence of approximately Thirty-three (33) CMM vessels at vicinity Rozul Reef and Fifteen (15) CMM vessels in Escoda Shoal. Maritime patrols carried out during the same period by BRP SINDANGAN (MRRV 4407) and BRP CABRA (MRRV 4409) further validated the presence of these CMMs in these West Philippine Sea features. During the same period the PCG launched missions to conduct extensive underwater surveys of the seabed in both Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal. The results of these surveys showed that the marine ecosystem in the subject WPS features appeared lifeless, with minimal to no signs of life. Moreover, the surveys conducted in Escoda Shoal revealed visible discoloration of its seabed, strongly indicating that deliberate activities may have been undertaken to modify the natural topography of its underwater terrain. The presence of crushed corals strongly suggests a potential act of dumping, possibly involving the same dead corals that were previously processed and cleaned before being returned to the seabed. The continued swarming for an indiscriminate illegal and destructive fishing activities of the Chinese Maritime Militia in Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal may have directly caused the degradation and destruction of the marine environment in the WPS features.
