Did you know not all tornadoes spin in the same direction? I’ve chased hundreds of tornadoes and I can only confirm 2 as being anticyclonic. The first one in 2016 near Big Spring, TX and another one in 2022 near Winnipeg, Manitoba.

I’ve chased tornadoes for almost 25 years. And in that time, only one has ever chased me. It was, of course, the El Reno, OK tornado of 5/31/13. It was 2.6 miles at its widest, had winds > 300 mph, and moved faster than 50 mph. For the first time, here is my full story: 1/25

If these tornadoes can pay the new Tornado Tax in Illinois, then some not-too-good shit will go down. Missouri will also have some problems this afternoon and tonight, especially near the St. Louis metro and south of the warm front.

One of the best places to chase tornadoes on earth is the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle’s. On April 15, 2016 I thought this supercell was going to plant a tornado right on top of this Tractor Supply in Dalhart, TX. Thankfully the storm took awhile longer to wind up, before producing multiple twisters near the town of Eva, OK in the panhandle. The panhandle’s in peak severe season on a severe weather day is heaven on earth for a storm chaser.

Check out this intercept of an EF3 #tornado at birth in the Dominator 3! Note the suction vortex that develops right in front of the vehicle as the dynamic pipe drills toward the ground. The Dominator allows us to get inside these tornadoes like no one else can safely, so we can record near-surface winds for #science

The “Tornado of the Century” that occurred near Wellfleet, NE in June, 2025, had it all. But my favorite phase during its over 1 hour lifespan, was the Powerhouse phase where this tornado reached the upper echelon of Beauty:Power possible by a tornado. I’ve seen tornadoes of all shapes, sizes and strength, and It does not get any better than this perfection in the open Sandhills of Nebraska.

When a huge tornado touched near the town of Clear Lake, South Dakota, on Saturday, June 28, storm chaser Ty Newcomb captured dramatic footage of the event. Newcomb said it was one of the most “incredible” tornadoes he had ever witnessed. Multiple tornadoes, including an EF-2 and an EF-3 tornado, formed in South Dakota last month, damaging two homes. No deaths were reported. #tornado #stormchaser

Today is the 18th anniversary of one of the most devastating and powerful tornadoes in modern history. On May 4th, 2007 a nearly 2 mile wide EF5 tornado engulfed virtually all of Greensburg, Kansas, killing 11 and leveling 95% of the city.
