Did you know that children’s language learning occurs along two interconnected pathways? Receptive language - which develops earliest - is the ability to comprehend (incoming) spoken language, while expressive language (outgoing) relates to a child’s ability to communicate his/her thoughts. One important thing for parents to note about receptive... language is this: Children are always listening and learning. Always. Even before you might think they are. So choose the language they are exposed to - both in person and via media - very carefully. Also remember things you say about YOURSELF. Hearing our mothers say things like “I’m fat” “I hate my curly hair” “I feel ugly” make littles (especially girls mimicking our moms) look at themselves in unflattering light. Bc if mom hates her curly hair I should hate mine too

My grandson started school in California kindergarten all his classes were in Spanish , English not spoken . He’s in 4 th grade now and is fluent in Spanish reading writing and speaking with a proper accent . Bilingual at 10 is fantastic to me .

Thank you🙏Yes,this is so true 😊 My 6 month old grand communicates what she needs,so effectively with her Expressions, Sounds and Body language, I am amazed. It takes us a little while sometimes to figure out, but her instant gratification when we do, is also equally telling ❤️

Your baby understands more than you might think. And this is especially true when it comes to language. I’ve written extensively over the years about the gulf between receptive language (that which we understand) and expressive language (that which we can speak), but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any better illustration than this fantastic video, shared with me by Phoebe Arslanagić-Little. In it, her 10-month-old daughter - whose current expressive language is limited mostly to “dada” - correctly identifies 8 African animals, none of which are yet a part of her spoken vocabulary. It’s an amazing illustration of the order in which we acquire language (receptive before expressive) and a powerful reminder that our little ones are taking in the world more extensively than we sometime give them credit for. (This can cut both ways, incidentally, so never assume they aren’t taking in adult content/discussions just because they’re too little. Once that expressive language catches up you might be surprised to discover just how extensive their adult vocabulary can be. 😃). And kudos to grandma, who enabled this - not by drilling our hero on animal names, but by narrating their joint playtimes. Just fantastic!

But it also plays a transformative role in cognition, helping us to communicate with ourselves and regulate our emotions. In time, language shapes not only what we know and say, but how we think and feel. During the years of early childhood, the acquisition of language revolutionizes young children’s approach to the world. They go from being unable to express their needs and feelings (a frustration that leads to things like crying to biting), to using language to process, communicate and regulate their behavior/emotions. And what a lovely example we have here. Marleigh’s dog Zoey has ripped apart (“eaten”) her stuffed Mickey Mouse toy. Listen to her self talk: “I did it!” “Good job!” “Awesome.” This isn’t language she’s concocted on her own. It’s the kind of language modeled by her parents as part of a key life lesson: You are capable. That doesn’t mean unending - or empty - praise. But it does mean that when you demonstrate your own belief in your child’s abilities, they’re likely to internalize it. “You can do it” becomes “I can do it.” Choose your words with the knowledge that your voice will echo as your child’s own.

Check out this little guy who’s joined his dad for a little jog, which he’s decided is the key to becoming muscular like his father… even pausing mid-run to check whether “bumps” have developed on his arms. Sometimes it’s tempting to believe children are too young to notice the language we use and the behaviors we demonstrate. But they aren’t… even as infants and toddlers. They are always watching, listening, and learning. It’s a big responsibility. So be the role model you aspire to be. This amazing father-son duo was shared to IG by weatherford5.

Infants are the world’s most accomplished language learners. As the process unfolds, children pass through stages of progressively more complex “babbling” before they begin using conventional words. But babbling isn’t limited to spoken language. Deaf children and the children of deaf parents pass through similar stages as they approximate the use of sign language - which brings us to this video, shared to IG by oursignedworld. Watch how locked in this little guy is as he “speaks” with his deaf father, observing dad’s sign language and then “babbling” back with his arms and hands. In time he will become both an accomplished signer and speaker. What a lovely example of language acquisition in process.

One of the determining factors in both the speed at which your child develops language and the size of his/her early vocabulary is exposure to (direct & interactive) caregiver speech. Even before your baby is using language conventionally, he/she is soaking up all of yours. (And I do mean ALL… keep it G-rated.) One way to support your baby’s language/brain development is to narrate your life together. (Engage your child by talking about the steps you’re taking as you fold the laundry, for example. Or describe what you’ve received as you sort through the mail.) This grandpa gets a gold star here - not only narrating, but turning the simple act of rolling a ball back and forth into a thrilling TV sports play-by-play that includes the baby’s name and actions over and over. What a lucky little guy to be so immersed in language. He’ll be better off for it… just you wait and see! Check out little Sam here as he switches back and forth seamlessly between Polish (the native language of his mother) and English (his father). From 1 May, Maharashtra is applying a rule of knowing basic Marathi on Auto and Taxi drivers in state. They will go to a registration centre to read, write, and speak Marathi. I support it. While some might feel this is outrageous and unions are deciding to protest, it is not really a high expectation. I don’t understand how you never tried to learn the language while working in Maharashtra for decades. Most signboards are in Marathi, you meet Marathi speaking people daily, you just catch the language naturally. You have to be stubborn to not to use it. While I support this language requirement for auto & taxi drivers, I would also like to see it applied in corporate & other jobs as they are the ones who are most ignorant for the language. Just add some more days for learning how to write. Marathis love the literature. Most people I know have read some poet or some writer. Many of them love to write on their own. The language sentiment comes from this love for literature. They cannot see it perish and we must respect it. Jai Maharashtra!
