This looks beautiful and I don't want to sound like a hater, but are all these minute detail necessary?

Hi! Thanks. In some cases no. A lot of projects has a specific art style in mind that you need to adapt, or you are forced to use tech that doesn't allow to go so deep into details due to memory budget limits or prioritized visual consistency. At the same time If you know the tricks and do these things practically every day, you adjusted to that, it starts to be predictable for you and these small details don't take up much time at all to make but sometimes are necessary and help build the believability of the weapon/asset. It's often a skillful juggling between masks and adding a few hand-held brush strokes from time to time.
