Never teach this to children. It's too easy to confuse place value with subtraction.

I love this method, too. It really embraces place value.

Like it, but would ELE students grasp the concept of negative numbers and subtraction before two and three digit subtraction? ELE math educators what say thee? I love teaching other methods for solving anything. But is this apropos for ELE? Maybe MS/JrH.

I showed my 2nd graders this method and many loved doing subtraction like this. But I think it’s important that we use the complete number like 300-100 (not 3-1), 40-60 (not 4-6) etc. It’s important for young learners to keep the place value in tact.

In my state, elementary students are not introduced to negatives until 6th grade.

Can you also add left to right?
