Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

Because it came on a floppy disk format, it allowed players to SAVE their progress — a groundbreaking feature at the time. Later on, it was re-released in NES and Famicom cartridge form, and that’s probably the version most gamers experienced first. The floppy disk version of Zelda is originally yellow, but I swapped the shell using a gold cartridge from another game and made myself a golden Zelda floppy disk. Pretty cool, right?

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is known for being one of the greatest adventure games of all time, but what a lot of people missed was its unique PvP mode. This game gave you the ability to get very creative with combos and there was nobody better at showcasing this than CHECK. These short clips demonstrate the many different ways you can build your combos and how you can use the stages to alter your combo routes. This was just a fun game mode that was never taken seriously by players, but it is cool to see how much detail went into it and how much the systems inside it allowed you to express yourself. If we get a 3D Kollection, including this game is an absolute must. This game is what you would refer to as "lightning in a bottle".

Since each disk holds 1.22 MB, the game runs on roughly 8.5 MB of data. The X68000 was originally designed to operate without a hard drive, so you first insert two disks to load the initial data, then swap in the remaining five disks one by one. After all the data is loaded, the game finally starts. X68000 games have the advantage of graphics that are almost identical to the arcade, but their biggest defining feature is that, when connected to a Roland MIDI interface, they can deliver far richer background music than what you’d hear in the arcade. Who remembers this classic shooter from 35 years ago? SWIV (or "Silkworm IV" as called by some) from 1991. Graphics and sound effects were excellent for its time. But what I liked the most was that you could toggle through the power ups by shooting at them when they dropped. It added some extra fun and complexity, it allowed you to really improve (or mess up!) your weapons path. The game was considered a spiritual successor to Tecmo's arcade game Silkworm from 1989. The game's heritage is evident from the game design whereby one player pilots a helicopter, and the other an armoured Jeep. SWIV is not an official sequel, as noted by ex-Sales Curve producer Dan Marchant: "SWIV wasn't really a sequel to Silkworm, but it was certainly inspired by it and several other shoot-'em-ups that we had played and loved." If you listen closely to the sound effects, you will definitely hear a resemblance to "Silkworm." Sometimes I would just let the intro run endlessly - the music was simply too good!

To this day, even 37 years later, the game I associate the most with the Psygnosis logo is Shadow of the Beast. The game itself was fascinating - in the sense that graphics and sound were both perfect 10s, while gameplay was a 3 at best. Maybe I am being a bit harsh, but I think we can all agree that there was a massive gap between how it looked/sounded and how it played. And yet its burned into my memory forever and certainly has its place in gaming history. Psygnosis published around 100 games, but that logo will always give me Shadow of the Beast vibes.
