Digital Foundry says the rumoured leaked specs difference between Xbox Helix and PS6 (~26% CU), which is far less than between Series X and PS5 (44% CU, but PS5 clocks are faster) is unlikely "to get you a whole lot" and it's "basically not that meaningful". Oliver adds "especially... if you're looking at an unsubsidised box on one end, subsidised box on the other end, there could be a substantial price price premium you're paying for that performance." "Because the new Xbox Magnus die is also over 400mm squared, even though I think it is a dual die design, that is a considerably large die for a console. Whereas PS6 seems to be a die around PS5 Pro size, as it's a very svelte die that's monolithic, so that should be cheaper to produce just by its nature as well" Considering #PS5 is also launching AFTER #Xbox Helix, and is likely to come with more mature or advanced Project Amethyst features or customisations, and Helix might not have tenrpole Xbox exclusives either, next-gen could be one where the new Xbox hardware is considerably worse value proposition vs PlayStation hardware, more so than all prior gens.show more

Digital Foundry on #Xbox Project Helix: “It is the end of a fully focused console environment for Xbox” "From a developer perspective, Xbox is a PC" "Probably just going to be running those PC games" "Perhaps one that receives a limited level of specific optimisations but basically runs the exact same code as the PC build. "Project Helix will present as a console, but it will be running Windows - think a more tightly defined version of the ROG Xbox Ally X front-end." "They're developing for Windows at this point." "Not have people make bespoke Xbox versions anymore" "Will [Series X] get a disgraced ending?" "We may actually see Series X get like a thown to the dustbin of history kind of feeling at the end of it." "Series S has meant a lot of development effort for a lot of studios, so if it gets dropped I wouldn't be so sad, but I'm just very curious what it means for the future development of Xbox games during the cross-gen period" "The feedback we get all the time is memory management [on Series S] has been very very challenging"

It's PS5 RDNA 1.5 all over again, and reading responses, like a certain fandom never gets tired of being let down or uninformed. There's reasons PS5 often outperforms Xbox Series X despite the latter having 44% more compute than PS5 and being "full RDNA 2", which Digital Foundry did a video on. As I said at the start of the gen, most RDNA2 features Xbox/PC fans claim PS5 is missing, it was unlikely to use as they're Microsoft DirectX RDNA tie in features, and PS5 doesn't use DX but instead its own proprietary custom API called AGC. Why would PlayStation push for Microsoft DirectX RDNA features, when they don't use DirectX? Any AGC API specific graphics features PS5 uses (that Xbox wouldn't have) are not widely publicly advertised, as PlayStation don't need to advertise them the way Microsoft does due to their PC DirectX market. Thus every customisation PS5 has (which Kepler seemingly glosses over or doesn't recognise), from its faster clockspeeds, cache scrubbers, I/O set up, CPU alleviating decompression, DMA controllers and processors, geometry engine etc, will have been specifically designed around AGC or vice versa, NOT DirectX RDNA2 features. PS6 will be no different. There may be DirectX RDNA5 features they do not need or use, but there will inevitably be other unique customisations of their own and for their OWN proprietary API instead, no doubt bolstered by Amethyst custom features from their partnership with AMD. If history is any indicator, PlayStation is right to prioritise their own API and modifications, as these tend to have greater cost to perfomance results for the hardware vs the competition. The RDNA2 DirectX image below is taken directly from AMD's website, and again, PlayStation doesn't use Microsoft's DirectX. #PS6

I think we’ll see the full creative vision of GTA 6 once the PC/PS6/Xbox Helix version comes out. As stunning as Grand Theft Auto VI currently looks, its hard to believe that the game will cut some corners to optimize for the current gen hardware. But looking back at Grand Theft Auto V releasing at the end of a console lifecycle then getting the next-gen version was a night and day difference; it showed how much corners Rockstar Games had to cut in order to optimize this game and run well for PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. I believe it is the same situation with the current gen consoles, the GPUs may be powerful, especially on the PS5 Pro; there are going to be some CPU limitations with the Zen 2 architecture.

XBOX Gen-10 details: • Microsoft's next-generation Xbox (Gen-10) is the company's most ambitious and risky gaming platform, built as a Windows 11 gaming PC with a TV-optimized, console-like interface. • It supports full backward compatibility for all Xbox One, Series X|S, and legacy games, plus any Windows 11 PC titles. • Users can exit the Xbox interface to full Windows for tasks like streaming, coding, or music production, akin to Steam Deck's Linux mode. • Core hardware features an AMD semi-custom SoC codenamed “Magnus.” • AMD CEO Lisa Su: “Development of Microsoft's next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” • 2027 launch is a "best-case scenario"; Microsoft insiders are surprised by Su's timeline, pending Windows 11 polish. • Xbox President Sarah Bond confirmed a multi-year Xbox-AMD partnership for hardware and backward compatibility. • Xbox and Windows teams collaborate for a seamless, console-like OS experience atop Windows 11. • Supports multiple storefronts: Xbox Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store, with ports to PS and Switch 2. • The "Xbox Everywhere" strategy offers hardware choices via OEM partners like ASUS (Xbox Ally preview). • OEMs (ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer) to offer a range of Xbox-branded devices at different price/performance points. • Microsoft plans its own first-party Xbox handheld in the future. • NPU-powered features like auto-generated gameplay highlight clips, testing on Xbox Ally X, and rollout in March 2026. • Emphasizes cross-play, cross-saves, and cross-purchasing via Xbox Play Anywhere to grow the industry. • First-party games ported to Steam, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch 2. • Easier developer publishing tools; major updates at GDC 2026. • Polished software experience is critical; current Ally handhelds highlight Windows issues to fix. • Epic Games Store and Steam are expected to be part of the next Xbox’s multi-store openness, alongside Xbox’s own store. • Price is uncertain (due to tariffs and costs; OEMs for affordability), but the next Xbox may skew more premium (~$1,000)—while lower-end options may persist via partners. Also, Series S support will be extended. • Echoes the original Xbox vision of Windows in the living room; Surface-like premium ecosystem strategy. via: Windows Central Jez

Why did XBOX use a PS5 Pro to market their flagship IP? > First I thought they wanted to show the prettiest version of Halo, so they chose the most powerful console on the market. But then... why not just use a high end PC? It would look even better right? > Then it hit me. Showing the game running flawlessly on PlayStation hardware is a direct sales pitch to the PS5 playerbase. Microsoft knows exactly where the money is. A huge chunk of sales for this are gonna come from PlayStation owners who've never even played a Halo game before. Putting the PS5 Pro front and center tells Sony fans that this isn't some lazy afterthought port. It's fully optimized for their devices. Zero pride. 100% pragmatism. I respect it, but I'm not sure if this was a good move for the Xbox brand. Do you think it was the right call?

Path Tracing on PS5 Pro even as a demo and at 30fps, pretty much confirms at least some games will use PT on PS6, which I said months ago but some said I was crazy for suggesting. PC gamers won't want to admit it, but next-gen the gap between console and higher end PC may shrink in terms of real world differences, bolstered by more competent RT and AI upscaling tech in the next-gen consoles. Keep in mind Valve already confirmed what Steam data already showed, that "the steam machine is equal or better than ~70% of what people have at home", and the Steam Machine is reportedly similar in perfomance to the BASE PS5. In regards to PT in F1 on PS5 Pro, I say drop the base resolution further (there's examples of PSSR 2 looking great even at 864p) and give us 40fps or higher. Also, this is a reason the future/RDNA4 RT tech and custom AI hardware in PS5 Pro was noteworthy. The "2-3x" PS5's RT performance Cerny quoted clearly wasn't just PR bluster. Outside of this demo, it's already allowing WAY better RT than PS5 in some games (Cyberpunk, F1, AC Shadows etc), with better image quality and/or perfomance to boot. Such demo's show there's potentially more to extract, especially for quality modes. #PS5Pro #PS6

This is the closest Game we have to compare to GTA VI in terms of Open-World Gameplay. This Matrix: Awakens footage was recorded on Xbox Series X and as you can see the FPS is struggling to stay above 30FPS. The resolution also takes a big hit when you start moving the camera too fast because of so much processing happening at the same time. Considering GTA 6 has probably 10X times the mechanics of NPCs behavior going on and physics that are miles ahead of this game, it's safe to say that a performance mode is going to be near impossible in a PS5/Xbox Series X and S Version. Perhaps when PS5 Pro launches we will get a 60FPS mode, but things are looking rough right now. Let's see how well Rockstar Games manages to optimize their next GTA For more in-depth insights, updates, and discussions on the gaming and tech universe, join me on this exciting journey. In a new interview #Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella says “We want to be a great publisher, and a great platform provider for games, across both PC's and Xbox's.” Noting only #Xbox and PC specifically, is a departure from a 2025 interview in which he said: “We want to be everwhere on every platform...whether it's consoles, whether it's the PC, whether it's mobile, whether it's cloud gaming, or the TV, we just want to make sure the games are being enjoyed by gamers everywhere.” He's gone from saying “consoleS” plural, implicating PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox, to now specifying Xbox and PC. Could be nothing, but it could also be an indication Xbox is considering adopting more console exclusivity going forward. Satya repeatedly talking about the importance of their IP however (like he also did in another recent interview), does give further credence to the rumours Microsoft may be looking to divest Xbox entirely in future, or at least make it more enticing for prospective buyers. Massively trimming fat with vast layoffs and studio divestments, closures etc, is also something businesses often do when they're trying to re-package a business to be easier to sell, with a focus on being cost effective in the run up to sale, vs having optimum output and release potential. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how things play out over the next several years.

SONY WON'T SAY WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR PS5 DISCS. XBOX JUST LEAKED ITS ANSWER publisher roadmap obtained by the verge on august 3, reportedly codenamed positron. microsoft has confirmed none of it. - one pass through the drive on an xbox one or series x mints a digital license for that game - the disc goes back on the shelf. the game boots on your xbox hardware, drive or no drive - the license lives with the disc. lend it out, and the moment it spins in someone else's console your copy dies and theirs wakes up - series s owners get nothing. no drive, no way in - publishers pick which games qualify and are allowed to bill you for the conversion the roadmap stamps its own dates as subject to change, and the verge reports july's insider beta was delayed. sony finally spoke last week and still would not say whether the ps5 collection you already paid for follows you to ps6. microsoft is getting applause for this. it is the same destination sony chose, approached with better manners. a disc from 2013 needs no server, no account, no living publisher - it spins and it works. the shelf behind you took years to build and asked permission from nobody. keep that in mind while everyone claps.

Marc Andreessen on the 3 things he looks for when investing in a startup The first thing Marc Andreesen looks for is a big market: “Is there a big existing market that you think you can go after and displace incumbents? Or do you believe there will be a new market that will be big?” The second thing he looks for is a 10x better product: “Is there a fundamental technology or economic change that justifies a new company? And the way I always think about that is: Is there a 10x change happening in the technology landscape? Is something 10x faster, 10x cheaper, or 10x better? If it’s not 10x, we as both VCs and entrepreneurs have to ask ourselves if it’s really worth doing because it’s really hard to start new companies . . . Existing companies are usually pretty good at what they do. So for a new company to exist, it has to bring a product to market that’s so much better than what exists that it punches through the status quo.” The third is the team: “Is the team outstanding? . . . You want to have a founding team of complementary skillsets. You want to have at least one super strong technologist — quite possibly more than one. Some of the best startups are actually more than one founding technologist. And then it often helps to have someone who is a marketing or salesperson who has a really good understanding of business.” Marc believes that you need all three of these, but if you’re going to compromise on one of those as an investor, it should be the product: “A great market is a lot easier to make up for with iterative product execution. The problem with a poor or small market is that even if you do a good job on the product, there just aren’t that many customers so it’s hard to ever get big and people get demoralized . . . And then we evaluate the team of a startup by its ability to get into a big market with a good product.”

XBOX CEO Asha Sharma says that gamers want physical media, so they are announcing when you purchase a game you get both They are keeping physical discs, and when you buy one it will come with a digital entitlement How it will work: - Put the disc in an Xbox that has a disc drive - Launch the game - Claim a digital license on your Xbox account - After that, you can play the game without putting the disc in, the disk will still work like a normal game disk The digital license is tied to that specific disc, not permanently locked to you forever If you sell or give the disc away and the new owner inserts it and claims it, the digital license moves to their account and comes off yours This is the way it would be. Getting both physical media and digital media that you can own and sell Launch is with 1,000 games and more coming later

It is diabolical! I called it last year. It was Phil Spencer's idea for the Game Pass pivot. He was the one who decided to bring Forza, Gears of War, and Halo over to PlayStation 5. He was the one who said there was no way to compete with PlayStation, and now the number of exclusives will get people to not buy a PS5 and suddenly buy an Xbox. Sarah Bond didn't have the position long, and all of a sudden, she is to blame for the Culture Change for XBOX? I saw it coming the moment she was selected as the new President of XBOX. They were going to throw the sista under the bus. Now Phil Spencer can retire unscathed by this backlash, while every article points the finger at Sarah Bond for the company's failure. XBOX has been failing since the XBOX 1. They need to take that bullshit somewhere else, because they aren't fooling me.
