BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955) Perhaps the best director's commentary ever. John Sturges shares more film info, history and knowledge in the first five minutes than other directors can in two hours. Paul Thomas Anderson said this commentary is better than four years of film school.

In a @TCM interstitial about #RobertRyan, #ErnestBorgnine notes that Ryan used every acting trick he knew to stay in this scene with #SpencerTracy. Why did he fail? 1) Spencer Tracy, 2) Camera angle, and 3) Ryan's costume was like camouflage. #JohnSturges #BadDayAtBlackRock

Interesting for him to talk about it being natural and then have goofy bad cuts that are arguably pretty distracting. Filmmaking is hard.

Did I say 💎 gem? More like gem 💎 mine! If you have anywhere to hear all of this? What a great podcast that would make…love hearing older directors and how they worked bc with these limitations back then…they would get more ambitious ❤️🎥

Good advice.

🥺They left this commentary off the bluray

This is really, really good stuff

One of my favorite movies. What a look.

There is no such thing as film school today. Anyone can buy lights, a camera and edit on their computer. Film school dead. Save your money and put it into a few films and remove the nightmare of useless instructors.

Finally watched it with the commentary at the weekend. The man knew his stuff. And wonderful to hear him dispel the Deeper Meaning theories of the serious movie reviewers as “no, I just did it because…”

Up your alley @AVARY
