AI for robotics has some monumental challenges, like high dimensionality and reasoning with the physical world. Ashok Elluswamy, AI lead at Tesla, thinks the hardest problem is Evaluation. - Loss isn't a perfect indicator of Policy Neural Network's quality. - Testing in the real world for all the long-tail failure cases is not possible. To solve the evaluation challenge, Tesla has developed a World Simulator Model. It is trained on state and action pairs, so for a given current camera feed and current action, the model generates the next frame in the cameras. Once the world simulation is good enough, it can be hooked up to the policy network for a closed-loop simulation. In this setup, the model generates the next video frames, and based on those, the policy network comes up with the next action, which feeds back into the world simulation; this continuous loop creates a coherent simulation. The world simulation neural network is not just applicable to self-driving but also to humanoids, because Tesla trains it on common data. The examples show Optimus navigating or manipulating inside the world simulation, with all the pixels being generated by the world simulation model. The robotic agents can be tested in an accurately reproduced edge case and in other potential variations of the same edge case.

Introducing Petri Dish Neural Cellular Automata (PD-NCA) 🦠 The search for open-ended complexification, a north star of Artificial Life (ALife) simulations, is a question that fascinates us deeply. In this work we explore the role of continual adaptation in ALife simulation, where the cellular automata in our system do not rely on a fixed set of parameters, but rather learn continuously during the simulation itself. Our Petri Dish Neural Cellular Automata (PD-NCA) is a new ALife substrate that consists of a differentiable world where multiple NCA learn to self-replicate and grow via ongoing gradient descent. Every individual is constantly trying to grow, all the while learning to adapt and out-compete its neighbors. PD-NCA allows for complex, emergent behaviors like cyclic dynamics, territorial defense, and spontaneous cooperation. The video below shows the sheer variety and complexity that unfolds during several different simulations (each colour is a different NCA).

#compchem Just published in Chemical Science: Water-Glycan Interactions Drive the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Dynamics: Insights into Glycan-Gate Control and Camouflage Mechanism. Towards developing therapeutic strategies against #COVID19, we performed μs-long all-atom AMOEBA high-resolution polarizable adaptive sampling molecular dynamics simulations and zoomed in on the #SARSCoV2 interaction layers in open and closed states. I tested out Cyberpunk 2077 Path Tracing turned on with RX 9070 XT now that FSR Redstone is out. By using the new FSR Redstone and FSR ML Based Frame-Gen, the game reaches up to 130FPS in 1440p with FSR set to Performance Mode. The performance gains are not that much higher compared to the previous versions of FSR but the image quality got a huge upgrade, especially when using Frame-Gen. This ML based Frame Gen is much better than the previous version as it gets rid of most artifacts and ghosting caused by the previous version. If for some reason you always wanted to play Cyberpunk 2077 with Path Tracing turned on on an AMD GPU, now you can enjoy a playable experience with 100+ FPS on an RX 9070 XT. I still don't recommend it though as the frame pacing and input lag still feels off for me, I'd just rather play this without Frame Gen and Path Tracing. I'm going to test out Black Myth: Wukong next

This video, created by my dear coauthor Mahdi E Kahou for our teaching and papers, shows how overparameterized neural networks produce smooth function approximations even in the context of the Runge phenomenon. Some background. Imagine you want to approximate the Runge function using polynomial interpolation at equally spaced points. It is well known that, despite targeting an infinitely differentiable function, such a polynomial approximation produces oscillatory behavior that worsens with the degree of the polynomial. In other words, higher-degree polynomial approximations might not improve accuracy. Instead, approximate the Runge function with a neural network (here, two layers are just to make the example concrete; nothing fundamental depends on it). As you increase the number of parameters well above the 11 training points (in our example, a two-layer neural network with 128 nodes each), you nicely converge to the target, without wild oscillations. Yes, this has much to do with double descent and benign overparameterization, but the main punchline of this post is that neural networks are really very different types of animals than polynomial approximations. And yes, Chebyshev nodes and splines exist, and in this case, they will prevent the oscillations. But that's not the point. Chebyshev nodes and splines still confront Faber’s theorem, which states that for any system of polynomial interpolation nodes, there exists a continuous function whose sequence of interpolating polynomials diverges as the number of nodes grows to infinity. The Redwire Flight Operations team is in the middle of the Ivy Sting 4 exercise at Fort Carson in Colorado. Designed to test and refine the Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) prototype system, the focus for this exercise is on creating a unified, data-driven battlefield network to enhance decision-making and increase combat readiness across multiple domains.
