The knowledge lost during the Late Little Antique Ice Age, the Grand Solar Minimum, and the volcanic eruptions in 536 AD: - Hydraulic engineering: Aqueducts crumbled, sewage systems clogged, and many watermills fell silent for centuries. Knowledge of hydraulic concrete (pozzolana) was lost until it was rediscovered in the 18th century. - Architecture and construction mathematics: The geometric ratios, arch stability calculations, and material recipes used in large domes (like the Pantheon) were no longer widely understood. The Dark Age builders could imitate forms but not the structural logic behind them. - Mechanical engineering: The Alexandrian school’s mechanical devices (automata, geared mechanisms, and early clocks inspired by Hero of Alexandria) vanished. Greek texts on steam-powered devices, pneumatics, and mechanical computing were lost or only preserved in Arabic translation centuries later. - Astronomical and calendrical systems: The Roman solar calendars and knowledge of precession, planetary models, and eclipse prediction decayed. By the 7th century, much of Europe had reverted to crude seasonal timekeeping. - Industrial production: The production of Roman glass, steel, pottery, and textiles collapsed when trade routes disintegrated. The recipe for transparent glass and Roman steel (ferrocementum) was forgotten for centuries. - Maritime technology: The decline of maritime trade led to the loss of large-scale shipbuilding skills. Mediterranean navigation regressed to coastal sailing until the Islamic Golden Age revived it.

on april 7th, 2089, at approximately 11:31 AM, a malfunction in the fusion core of the uss gawrgura causes the ship's reactor to go asymmetrial. without intervention, the ship, along with its 1,331 crewmembers, will be disintegrated within minutes. against all odds, resident nuclear technician sealnar volunteers to repair the damaged core. amongst the crew, only sealnar possesses the swimming skills and technical expertise to conduct the repairs... but even a few seconds within the cooling tanks will spell certain death. over the next 8 minutes, sealnar will make five trips to the entry point, ferrying mission-critical equipment and tools to the core. a journalism intern, visiting on behalf of the "myths and stories multinational news conglomerate," captures this clip, as sealnar surfaces for the final time. in the clip, the irradiated sealnar glows a bright blue– while precise measurements cannot be known, experts investigate that the dosage received by sealnar could kill ten thousand men within hours... yet despite his failing body, sealnar ventures forth once more. five days later, the uss gawrgura returns to the continental us, where diagnostics and repairs can be properly conducted. as inspectors detoxify and unseal the ship's fusion core, they discover a shriveled little crisp of a sort lying idle at the bottom of the tank, still glowing a dim shade of blue. though any recognizable genetic material has been obliterated beyond all recognition, an autopsy reveals somethign shocking: sealnar's lucky pyrite tooth, unscathed by the fusion core, still lodged within sealnar's shriveled remains.
