We caught a comet! ☄️ The Compact Coronagraph (#CCOR1) on NOAA's #GOES19 🛰️ tracked #Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) over the weekend. According to NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, "The comet does not appear to have survived its close approach to the sun and likely disintegrated into dust and gas...

Here is comet C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy) passing perihelion on December 16th, 2011. This too was a very small Kreutz comet, but it managed to survive perihelion, brightening to around magnitude -4. As bright as Venus. The comet survived the perihelion passage, but disintegrated four days later, emerging in the twilight sky as a headless comet. Note how dramatically the comet brightens as it approaches perihelion! Comet MAPS should also undergo rapid brightening - if it does not fall apart.

.NOAA's #SpaceWeather Prediction Center has issued a G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for April 16, after a coronal mass ejection (#CME) erupted from the sun last Sunday. The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (#SUVI) onboard NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ captured the Earth-directed double filament eruption. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center #GOES19

Here we observe the full transit of Comet C/2025 R3 PANSTARRS in-between the Sun and Earth thanks to SOHO's C3 Coronagraph. Such a beautiful spectacle!

Fun fact. NASA's Parker Solar Probe survived its closest ever approach to the Sun. It broke its previous record by flying just 3.8 million miles above the surface of the Sun, and it hurtled through the solar atmosphere at a blazing 430,000 miles per hour

IT WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE SUN… AND THIS IS THE SECOND VIEW ☄️🔥 Another angle just surfaced — showing how close this really got. Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) didn’t pass nearby… it drove straight into the Sun’s path. This is the moment where comets either survive the heat… or fall apart completely. Right now — no clear outcome. 👇 Did it make it through… or was this the end? #MrMBB333 #Spaceweather

Our NOAA GOES-19 CCOR-1 instrument is critical for observing and analyzing CMEs. But, sometimes, other activity comes into view, that while not space weather, is still fascinating! Such as this animation showing the recent passage of Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS).

We've now had two 2.5 x-flares from sunspot 4419 over the last 12 hours, both launching gigantic coronal mass ejections outwards pretty much in the direction of Comet C/2025 R3 PANSTARRS. Surprisingly we're not in a radiation storm yet, and plasma headed to Earth from these events seems to be minimal, but sunspot 4420 is nearly Earth-direct now and 4423 following just behind just blasted off a 1.7 m-flare. As Comet R3 PANSTARRS continues to fly across Earth-facing while cutting through the ecliptic plane just outside the orbit of Mercury, my forecast is that we're most likely to enhanced activity from 4420 and 4423 as well over the next 2-3 days. Keep in mind the comet will begin experiencing #spaceweather from the CMEs very soon, and that will energize it electromagnetically even further, perhaps pronouncing this Comet-Sun effect we're seeing even further...

Astronomers recorded the Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan ATLAS' path for an entire week using the SOHO space observatory. The comet's nucleus is clearly visible, surrounded by a dusty coma and trailing an impressively long tail. SOHO sees the large dust tail edge-on, curving in on itself as it is pushed outward by solar wind. ©️ European Space Agency / NASA

🌠 The sky keeps the show going: just hours after the solar eclipse, the Perseids reached their peak On the night of August 13, residents of Croatia and Bosnia witnessed one of the brightest meteor showers of the year. According to astronomers, around 100 meteors could be seen per hour. The Perseids appear every August as Earth passes through a trail of debris left behind by a comet.

They call it coincidence; I call it a sign in the sky! Our generation witnessed one of the rarest signs in the sky when the Hale-Bopp comet appeared in 1995 and stayed for 18 months. The comet was clearly visible even from cities where there is light pollution. The last time this comet was visible was during the 4.2 kiloyear event and the collapse of the old world, including the Indus Valley Civilization, the Akkadian Empire, and the Egyptian Kingdom. This was the time of our father Abraham and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. In 1997, when the comet appeared again in the sky, the geomagnetic excursion and the decline of the magnetic field accelerated. The movement of the North Pole reached a speed of 55 miles per year, which is equivalent to the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion. We are about to witness another civilizational reset soon!

A large CME is inbound to swipe Earth from the Sun, >10 MeV proton flux is currently 25x higher than normal (we're nearly in a radiation storm) with 4 astronauts currently well beyond low-earth orbit (think International Space Station), and a comet is flying into the Sun!!

THREE major comets in the next couple of months. In addition to much talked about 3I/Atlas, we have C/2025 A6 (Lemmon), and C/2025 R2 (SWAN). Swan was discovered on 9/11/25, and will pass by quite closely, in terms of comet tail lengths. We will possibly be passing directly through the tails of both Swan and Lemmon, very soon. And there may be close passes with the other inner planets.

🚨 🇺🇸 G4 GEOMAGNETIC STORM TARGETS 11 STATES: NORTHERN LIGHTS MEET POWER GRID CHAOS A severe geomagnetic storm is about to slam the northern U.S. this week. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center just issued G4 warnings for everything north of the 45th parallel: Oregon, Idaho, Montana, the Midwest, and Northeast. Translation: voltage control problems, satellites degrading, GPS errors, and protective systems misfiring across critical infrastructure. The aurora borealis might be visible as far south as Alabama. Beautiful. Terrifying. Space Weather Prediction Center: "Possible widespread voltage control problems and some protective systems may mistakenly trip out key assets from the power grid." Energy demand's at decade-high levels. AI data centers are gorging power. Now the sun decides to throw a tantrum. Source: NOAA / NewsWeek Media: Stefan Burns
