He admitted the situation pushed him to the brink, saying he felt so overwhelmed that he feared he might hurt one of the gang members. Eventually, he left the job. He told me that as a man, he couldn’t handle the stress of witnessing women and children being exploited and feeling powerless to stop it. On multiple occasions, I have also been told by different sources at migrant shelters that when couples arrive, the men with them are often fake fathers or partners pretending to be family members. As someone who has broken multiple human trafficking stories, I can relate to the feeling of helplessness when trying to help children and migrants who are being taken advantage of.
