Most people don't know that colonialism usually ended up costing colonizers more than they took from the colonies. With few exceptions the cost of security and maintenance of colonies was a losing proposition for the mother country, although some companies may have profited.

If we look at it properly, I would have said that it was mainly the Irish that built Britain. When the Navvies that came over had finished building the Canals, they went on to help build the Railways.
