Do carbs cause insulin resistance? (<90 sec)

Hopefully it's not controversial to claim a high glycemic load diet accelerates existing insulin resistance. A big open question: what is the 1st domino of insulin resistance? The mainstream would say excess calories. But perhaps consistently high GL or fructose is the 1st domino

The ADA, endocrinologists, and nutritionist need to get this message. The current practice for Type 1 diabetes is to "cover your carbs" with insulin. Absolutely lunacy! They're treating their type 1 patients by giving them type 2.

What's causing the insulin resistance? What's causing the hyperinsulinemia?

Nick, when you provide nuance and proper context, I could listen to you all day. Generalized statements and demonizing certain foods or macronutrients I fully admit, trigger me. 😂

Harry Potter is famous for eating "chocolate frogs": toxic heated seeds in the shape of frogs. This is because deep down, he craves meat and instead of following his instincts, he just follows the vegan propaganda he sees on X.

What he fails to mention is the context that matters most when eating carbs: your LIGHT (☀️ 💡) environment. Your body handles carbs differently depending on the time of day and where you eat them (indoors vs outside), and light helps set the daily schedule for the organs that control your blood sugar: > Sunlight reaches your eyes and sets your brain’s clock. > That clock helps coordinate when your pancreas releases insulin and when your muscles are prepared to take glucose out of your blood. > Your liver follows a daily rhythm too. > It releases glucose between meals, then needs to respond to insulin and dial that output back when you eat. > Sunlight also delivers red and near-infrared wavelengths that modern light environments do not have. > Red light has been shown to reduce the rise in blood glucose after a glucose drink, with increased cellular energy use as a possible explanation. So when I see someone talk about carbs without mentioning light, I think they’re leaving out a real part of the picture. Eating lunch outside puts you in daylight while your body handles the meal. Spending your days in natural light and your nights in darkness also gives those metabolic rhythms a clearer schedule to follow.

More like carbs are like gasoline. Pour a little into a well maintained engine and it runs fine. Flood a damaged engine repeatedly and you get backfires, residue, and eventually a broken system. The gasoline didn't cause the breakdown but it was the thing the breakdown ran on.

Now, we agree because you're representing the facts more correctly!

Answer is very personal context dependent

If someone is going a 16-8 during that time to eat can they pretty much eat whatever? And will those 16 hrs reduce the insulin resistance?

Over-consumption of carbs over long periods causes insulin resistance in many if not most. The S.A.D. is carb heavy. Carbs should be micro-dosed, timed before exercise and adjusted for individual needs.

Having a beer (or a few) doesn't cause alcoholism... Unless drink one every hour of every day.

Sunlight also helps with this
