Comedian Dave Chappelle says President Donald Trump has "squandered" his opportunity to unify the country. "The presidency is no place for a petty person," he told PBS News' Amna Nawaz. "Personally, I would say that, you know, anyone in any type of leadership position, or even like a nightclub comedian like me, we have to suffer slights and injuries. We have to kind of just let some things go." Chappelle reflected on his "Saturday Night Live" monologue in January 2025, shortly before Trump's inauguration. Author Emilee Hackney says she felt like she was on "another planet" when she arrived at Harvard after growing up in Appalachia. "That was also a very surreal experience," she told PBS News' amna. "I felt like I'd been dropped on another planet, just meeting all kinds of people from all different backgrounds I've never met before. I've never encountered so many different kinds of cultures or languages." Hackney, who grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia, also noted that she felt "exoticized" when people heard her accent and found out where she was from. "They've got this idea in their head of what that means, what Appalachia is, and suddenly I'm a stereotype," she said. "I'm kind of flattened in their eyes." Donald Trump's presidency has revealed the "baldly honest" way institutions have worked in the United States, says sociologist Tressie McMillan Cottom. "The idea of social progress blinded us to, I think, the dangers and the rigors of the places in our institutions that were absolutely capturing wholesale communities," she told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "What has happened under Trump is that the gap between our illusion about social progress and how institutions function has collapsed," she added. As prediction market betting becomes more prevalent in nearly every aspect of American culture, journalist and author David Hill says not everything needs to turn into a "betting proposition." "I don't think that it makes a lot of sense for us to want to turn every single proposition in American culture and life into a betting proposition," he told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "But I do think there's clearly a market for it." Hill added that America needs to "reckon" with the rapid rise of prediction markets and put regulations around the industry to protect people and prevent "large-scale corruption." "There's real life-and-death stuff that's getting bet on that I think behooves the government to get involved and figure out how we can regulate what types of things people are allowed to, you know, predict," he said. "I think the notion that we're predicting is a little bit ridiculous. ... What people are essentially doing is gambling." What changed about this narrative of sports and politics not belonging together is when, frankly, black athletes started to show more agency and started to speak more about some of the conditions that people in their community were facing or even some of the experiences that they had. That's when it became, oh no, don't mix sports and politics. In this particular case, this was an unforced error by Jaxon Dart. Again, Donald Trump is historically unpopular. You are the quarterback of the New York Giants. What was the point? What is the upside in appearing at this rally? Now, he has a right to support whoever he wants, but Abdul Carter has a right to criticize his support of that. And a lot of athletes, partly what makes them hesitant about talking about their political beliefs, is that they don't want the blowback and they don't want the resistance and how people might feel about it. So yeah, his teammate who is a Muslim, who's a black man in America, had every right to question him about what that support means, especially when you are considered to be the face of the organization and the sort of default leader of the entire team.”

The team held a town hall event in Milwaukee on Sept. 23 to talk to Wisconsin voters about their thoughts on what is dividing the country. Judy says she had wanted to hold a town hall since the inception of the “Crossroads” project. “It’s an honor to be able to sit down with with Americans in their community, in their home, in a beer hall and talk to them about what’s on their mind,” she said.
