Author Soman Chainani has a hot take on Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” “There's nothing about Ariel that's, to me, redeeming,” he told PBS News’ Amna Nawaz. As he got older, he recalls, he realized Disney logic "was often wrong, and that the hero would win in these movies without deserving to. And so I started to realize that I was right to root for the villains, because they actually deserved to win in a lot of stories that they lost." This is not the only vision for what it looks like to have politics in this country—that is so divorced from the needs and wants of everyday people. And what we are looking to show in New York City is an alternative to what has led so many to become disenchanted with the political process. We want to show that not only can government work, but it must, and that at its core, our responsibility is to working people—to ensure that we’re doing everything to make their lives easier. That has to be what drives our actions, and for too long, government has felt more like a distraction than a fulfillment of the needs of the people who’ve been left behind by the politics of today.

Author Emilee Hackney says she felt like she was on "another planet" when she arrived at Harvard after growing up in Appalachia. "That was also a very surreal experience," she told PBS News' amna. "I felt like I'd been dropped on another planet, just meeting all kinds of people from all different backgrounds I've never met before. I've never encountered so many different kinds of cultures or languages." Hackney, who grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia, also noted that she felt "exoticized" when people heard her accent and found out where she was from. Donald Trump's presidency has revealed the "baldly honest" way institutions have worked in the United States, says sociologist Tressie McMillan Cottom. "The idea of social progress blinded us to, I think, the dangers and the rigors of the places in our institutions that were absolutely capturing wholesale communities," she told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "What has happened under Trump is that the gap between our illusion about social progress and how institutions function has collapsed," she added. Cottom, a MacArthur Fellow and New York Times columnist, spoke to Bennett about waning public trust in institutions and how the second Trump administration has revealed the truth about power in America. "What we're seeing is a baldly honest version of institutions, certainly how institutions have worked for poor people in this country for generations, how they have worked for minorities, for immigrants, to a certain extent for women in this country, for sexual minorities, and that more people are now able to see it because they are now vulnerable to it," she said. As prediction market betting becomes more prevalent in nearly every aspect of American culture, journalist and author David Hill says not everything needs to turn into a "betting proposition." "I don't think that it makes a lot of sense for us to want to turn every single proposition in American culture and life into a betting proposition," he told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "But I do think there's clearly a market for it." Hill added that America needs to "reckon" with the rapid rise of prediction markets and put regulations around the industry to protect people and prevent "large-scale corruption." "There's real life-and-death stuff that's getting bet on that I think behooves the government to get involved and figure out how we can regulate what types of things people are allowed to, you know, predict," he said. "I think the notion that we're predicting is a little bit ridiculous. ... What people are essentially doing is gambling." Comedian Dave Chappelle says President Donald Trump has "squandered" his opportunity to unify the country. "The presidency is no place for a petty person," he told PBS News' Amna Nawaz. After 40+ years in office, Mitch McConnell finally has the chance to secure elections, but he refuses to support The SAVE America Act. Absolute betrayal of his voters. Nate Morris who is running to replace McConnell: “We need term limits... we don't need people making their career in politics... He has voted and represents against the interests of the people of Kentucky... He is actively thwarting the will of the people... This is Trump country... we have not seen a figure like this since the 1800's... McConnell has been in office since before the internet was created... he hasn't been in the real world in over 40 years.”

What changed about this narrative of sports and politics not belonging together is when, frankly, black athletes started to show more agency and started to speak more about some of the conditions that people in their community were facing or even some of the experiences that they had. That's when it became, oh no, don't mix sports and politics. In this particular case, this was an unforced error by Jaxon Dart. Again, Donald Trump is historically unpopular. You are the quarterback of the New York Giants. What was the point? What is the upside in appearing at this rally? Now, he has a right to support whoever he wants, but Abdul Carter has a right to criticize his support of that. And a lot of athletes, partly what makes them hesitant about talking about their political beliefs, is that they don't want the blowback and they don't want the resistance and how people might feel about it. So yeah, his teammate who is a Muslim, who's a black man in America, had every right to question him about what that support means, especially when you are considered to be the face of the organization and the sort of default leader of the entire team.”

President Donald Trump's decision to launch the war with Iran follows a "set of norms" that has developed throughout American history, says Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon Meacham. "What President Trump's doing in Iran, interestingly, is drawing on a set of norms that aren't quite explicitly spelled out, but have developed as part of our custom that presidents can exert force in this way," he told PBS News' Amna Nawaz. He said the nation’s founders were “intimately familiar with the history of what was the Old World,” which had been shaped by autocracies and wars. “The point of, in many ways, the late 18th century of that political revolution that the American experiment really embodies was, let's take the affairs of nations away from the whims of a single person, and let's at least try to entrust them to the clash of interests of the many,” Meacham explained. Since that time, he said, the power of the executive branch has "steadily” grown throughout U.S. history. "The only thing that's really important in determining the broad direction of the United States of America at this hour is what goes on in Donald Trump's head," Meacham said.
