(35)(16) (7)(5)(2)(8) (7)(8)(10) =560 🤓 I started using this "factor & multiply" method in elementary school to get around the "math facts" I had not been able to memorize. The strategy has served me well for years. 🥰

Love your t-shirt. And your question: why does this work?

You need to market those shirts or get a sponsorship. My wife would love that one for her students!

I use that one quite a lot for multiplication and division. These are the kinds of tricks that are very helpful to teach someone who is taking the GMAT, because for some reason, no calculator is allowed on the quant section.

I love this strategy, especially when students figure it out first themselves! I set up visual examples so they can see.

Yes! I learned this some years ago thx to @TeachDVontoure & @pwharris !!! Definitely not a trick!!! It is a #rocksolid numeracy strategy that helped me help a cohort of 6th graders become #mathematicians! 🤗❤️

35x16? 35x10=350 35x6=? 35x2=70 70x3=210 350+210=560 :)

I would just multiply 35x10 and 35x6 for quick mental math.

Yes. Love this strategy. Someone called it a trick, but it is actually a strategy based on a solid math property.

I can’t come up with anything better than 350 + 6*35, so 350+3*70 = 350+210=560
