Waking Up to an Alarm in Mornings can cause a Significant Surge in Blood pressure ➡️Many people routinely use an alarm to wake up. As per a study, waking up to an alarm can result in 74% increase in Blood pressure (BP), as compared to those who wake up naturally (without an alarm). ➡️The increase in BP is greater among those who have slept for less than 7 hours (before waking up). ➡️This surge in BP can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. ➡️The risk is higher among those who have preexisting heart disease or hypertension. ➡️Alarm can awaken you all of a sudden from deep sleep, and this can result in "sleep inertia", where a person can feel groggy for up to two hours. ➡️Waking up to an alarm can also increase the stress levels. What are the safer alternatives? 1. Avoid using alarm on a regular basis, 2. Sleep adequately (7-8 hours), allowing you to naturally wake up from sleep, 3. Allow natural light to come into your room, so that melatonin (sleep hormone) production in brain can reduce (with light exposure), allowing you to wake up naturally, 4. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule (going to bed at around the same time every night), which is in sync with your circadian rhythm, 5.
