When you were in opposition you said: “The power to stop these strikes lies squarely with the Government.” Now you’re in power and offering doctors a 0.9% above inflation pay award that would take 20+ years to undo the damage since 2008. It is not fair or reasonable for a fully qualified resident doctor in England to be earning £17.56/hr with £100,000 student loan debt. They’re asking for £22.67/hr - a bargain rate for their skill set. All doctors want is a credible path to full pay restoration. The only thing missing is a Government actually willing to meaningfully negotiate.

Doctors are leaving the NHS because they are undervalued. In 2024, more doctors applied to leave the UK than in the previous decade combined - the result of a system that is fundamentally broken. We now have the diabolical situation where 40,000 doctors are competing for just 10,000 training jobs. Without these posts, doctors cannot train to become consultants or GPs. The NHS is actively blocking its own future workforce. At the same time, our pay has been eroded. Even after the most recent deal delivered during a period of double digit inflation, doctors are still around 20% worse off in real terms than in 2008 despite working just as hard, in a system where patients are sicker and more complex than ever before. Tens of thousands of resident doctors in England stood up for our profession today, and I’m proud to be part of such a strong and united workforce. 83% of resident doctors voted NO to Wes Streeting’s offer, and I was one of them. After months to come back with something credible, what we were given was a rushed, last-minute deal that failed to fix the unemployment crisis and did nothing to move us closer to pay restoration. Instead, doctors are now being asked to take on a real-terms pay cut next year. Wes Streeting says he wants to build bridges, yet spends his time calling doctors “juvenile delinquents” and “moaning minnies”. So my message to Wes Streeting is this: stop the gaslighting. You have had months to produce something actually credible. Bring a serious offer on jobs and pay to the table. We are not going away. You will not split doctors from our union - we *are* the BMA. As you said in opposition, the power to stop these strikes lies squarely with the Government. Time to start acting like it.

I spent today on the picket lines as a resident doctor in England. We’ve reached a point where NHS doctors who want to care for patients - who’ve undertaken years of training - are being left without jobs. Not because the NHS has enough doctors but because the Government has capped how many doctors can progress to become Consultants or GPs. Those limits translate directly into fewer doctors in A&E, fewer GPs in communities, and overstretched hospital teams. At the same time, Wes Streeting is recommending a real terms pay cut for next year, on top of the 21% real terms pay loss we’ve already taken. It’s no surprise doctors are leaving when staying in the NHS keeps getting harder, and morale is plummeting. This strike is happening because the system is locking doctors out and letting patients down. Wes Streeting has the ability to turn this around at any moment by putting forward a realistic offer that deals with pay and the training caps. Until he does, I’ll keep showing up on the picket lines with Resident Doctors, because that’s the only way to protect the doctors the NHS relies on; and the care the public deserves. #payrestoration #endtrainingcrisis

I’m a resident doctor and I’ll be going out on strike from April 7th. Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer have removed 1,000 extra NHS specialist training jobs; a decision that means fewer potential consultants and GPs, and potentially longer waits for patients in the future. This not only harms doctors, it harms the public and the NHS as a whole. But this isn’t just about those 1,000 posts. It’s also about the bigger picture and what it symbolises. Doctors’ pay has been cut in real terms for over a decade, and resident doctors are still earning 21% less in real terms than a doctor in 2008. There are now far more doctors than speciality training posts, so thousands of doctors can’t progress in their careers to become specialists even though the NHS desperately needs more of them. Last year around 40,000 doctors applied for about 10,000 specialist training posts. Instead of expanding speciality training posts to tackle waiting lists, the number of potential future specialists is being reduced by this Labour Government. At the same time, during negotiations, the Government reduced the investment that had been discussed and spread it over three years instead. So we’re in a situation where pay is still down in real terms, training bottlenecks are rife across the NHS, and the number of potential future specialists is being reduced. That’s why I’m going out on strike with Resident Doctors.

The safety of workers is critical and so are the facts. There’s been a lot said about the CFMEU and Victorian workers this week. We stand firmly for workers’ rights. For fair pay, safe workplaces, and secure conditions. No one should fear having their wages cut or their hard-earned entitlements clawed back. And we can’t let this serious issue be the subject of untested and unfounded information. Victorians deserve honesty and workers deserve protection, not political games and the deep desire of the Liberals to claw back workers pay and conditions.
