Does it get any better than Russell Crowe in Gladiator? This final scene always touches my heart. Maximus fights his last battle and goes “home” to his family. So touching when his men honor him and carry him off the battlefield.

Russell Crowe said that when he was first approached to play Maximus, the script was very poor. It was so bad the producers wouldn’t send it to him in case it put him off. Instead, they just asked him to meet Ridley Scott. Crowe did get his hands on the script though, and didn’t like it. He was going to say no but he was working on The Insider (1999) at the time and its director, Michael Mann, told Crowe he should meet with Scott anyway. Crowe did and said: “Ridley’s pitch was basically – ‘we’ve got a $100m budget. It’s ancient Rome. You’re playing a General. And you’re being directed by me.’” Crowe was suitably impressed, and took the part. Gladiator (2000)

The emotional ending of Gladiator (2000) was not the original plan. In the first script, Maximus was supposed to survive after defeating Commodus. However, during filming, Ridley Scott approached Russell Crowe on set and told him: “With the way the story is unfolding, you cannot survive.” Both realized that Maximus only existed for one purpose: to avenge his family and reunite with them in the afterlife. If he lived, the character would lose all meaning. (Crowe even joked: “So what would Maximus do next? Open a pizza shop outside the Colosseum?”) The death scene and the final reunion in Elysium were late changes — and they became the greatest ones, turning the film into a true emotional masterpiece.

This news is really heartbreaking. I keep thinking about when he shared that in his family, no one has ever passed the age of 45 and it’s such a painful reality to carry. Hearing now that his brother has also passed just a few days ago makes it even heavier. My heart goes out to him and his entire family during this difficult time. I pray God gives them strength, comfort, and peace, and may his brother’s soul rest in perfect peace.

Even though they’re obviously trying to paint him as the bad guy, doesn’t it seem like Goliath embodies the traditional European notions of Courage and Honor better than David does in this scene? Goliath does not want to fight a child, an opponent far weaker than him, he even offers him a weapon and converses with him. Upon hearing david’s appeals to his god, Goliath even accepts the challenge to fight a God. And what does David do? He sneaks him while he’s not looking. This video encapsulates much of our history.
