The broader definition you have of power, the less the statement «power corrupts» is true. Owning things, a shop, or shares in a company, or being part of a contract, isn’t the same as power, IMO. Access to resources and having the possibility to go to court due to a breach of contract is not power. So you basically water down the concept to the degree where it becomes meaningless (look up deconstruction) and then you attack the claim about corruption and power. And that’s IMO nothing but an intentional or unintentional straw man.

Not really. We often discuss power in the context of economics as much as politics. Actually they (and other types of power) heavily interact. What you’re arguing is degrees of power. But even so, I also addressed your specific point in my video, so not sure where the straw man accusation comes from

Great discussion Lina. 👍 Some people are more susceptible to being corrupted than others and as you say power allows that susceptibility to be realized. Also there’s an aspect where people who are corrupt already, such as those who want tyranny, seek out positions of power to enable that.

I think exceptions can be made However the majority of who reach power start to see and feel what it is like to be big. a lot of businessmen who tend to abuse their selfish needs, or a politician who doesnt affirm his promises. most of those who reached power had to step on a lot

when we talk about power and corruption we are talking about high power about a small amount of power there are a lot of side parameters which can control the feeling of being powerful and beyond any order is the source of corruption

Sociopaths are 1 in 25 humans. This always needs to be factored into societal metrics as sociopaths simple do not have the means to experience empathy, guilt or shame. Those emotions are absent. Sociopaths with personality abnormalities are usually responsible for most mayhem.

c'mon do not follow famous people blindly, you can make your own conclusions (which are mor4e interesting by the way) . I only see couple of rules : Power doesn't corrupt impunity does. No one can stay clean in a corrupt system. Corrupt people strive for power to survive and they are chosen much more willingly by players behind the scenes.

No it does not. “Power attracts the absolutely corruptible” - Frank Herbert Power is a beacon for the evil among us. You can have a good person do good things with power, but power centers are so corrupt no good person can deal.

It’s rather like someone winning the lottery: power and money REVEAL who you are.

Most any person, without accountability becomes a worse version of themselves. The one exception might be the sigma type male, who is most inner-focused and self reflective. He already knows who he is and does not change with power. These types never run for office.

The grade of damage drastically changes with the scale of power. Looking the other way for a small personal gain is something else than, e.g. allowing lobbyists to create law or handing out tax payed state contracts for the benefit of a whole party. Both bad but different.

Power corrupts lesser men.

Maybe an individual alone can't wield absolute power. There is always a group, a system, created that enables this power consolidation. Also, when we talk about corrupt power, we usually associate it with political power and ill-gotten wealth, never with folks starting a company.

Power attracts those already with corruption tendencies. Those that are great at wielding power often don't want it and even actively avoid it.
