The City of SD just released its latest budget numbers and….it isn’t looking good. Despite all of the new fee increases, the City just posted a $23M deficit for Q1. The latest report confirms, the City does not have a revenue problem, it continues to have a spending and management problem that can only be solved through organizational reforms and a renewed focus on prioritizing the City’s core responsibilities.

The City of san Diego only has about $200M in GF reserves which is enough to fund just five weeks of city operations. Despite record high tax revenue of $2.1 billion last fiscal year, the city failed to put any additional funds in the reserves which leaves the city increasingly vulnerable to unforeseen revenue decreases and expense increases. In 2019, the City had about 19% of annual revenues in reserves but that number has now dropped to 11% - below the City established policy of 16.7%. The City has some one-time funds it can tap before using reserves, but at the current burn rate, the city is likely to be completely out of money within just 18-24 months.

Mamdani proposes a pied-à-terre tax, which would essentially double the property tax for those with a second home valued over $5M in the city. This is a false promise. It's a lie. Taxing the rich never works. The government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. When they use “tax the rich” as an excuse to increase spending, and then the rich leave, they will not scale back spending. Instead, the burden shifts to the middle class, until everyone is equally poor and government corruption thrives. Somehow through all of this, the government officials all get rich. Mamdani is selling a lie. Don't be stupid enough to fall for it.

Republican Congressman Rep. David Schweikert makes a great point here. The scale of U.S. spending and borrowing is so massive that eliminating entire departments or slashing foreign aid won’t solve the problem. We don’t have a spending crisis—we have a revenue crisis. It’s time billionaires pay their fair share. Sure, cuts can be made, but without addressing the revenue shortfall, the deficit won’t be fixed. And Republicans want to abolish the IRS? Seriously?

The American consumer has a story: spending is holding up, stadiums are full, gasoline sales are at record levels. There is just one problem. Those numbers can look strong even while consumers are buying less. Circle K just showed it. Fuel revenue jumped 33%, but US fuel volumes fell 1.6%. Americans are driving less, visiting stores less, and cutting back on discretionary purchases. That is not resilient demand. That is what demand destruction looks like when higher energy costs start consuming the household budget. The consumer is still spending. They just have less to spend.
