In 1995, she launched Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a nonprofit program that mails one free, high-quality, age-appropriate book every month to enrolled children from the time they are born until they turn 5 years old. The program has gifted more than 332 million free books to children across the U.S. and four other countries. As of 2026, 1 in 6 children under the age of 5 in the United States is actively enrolled in the program Books arrive at the child's home addressed directly to them. Dolly noted that getting mail with their own name on it builds immense self-esteem and a personal pride in reading Before the Imagination Library went global, Dolly founded the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to tackle education issues in her native Sevier County, Tennessee. In the early 1990s, she realized the high school dropout rate in her hometown was a staggering 35%. She launched an initiative promising every 7th and 8th grader a $500 check upon graduation under one condition: they had to sign a contract with a "buddy," and both students had to graduate together The foundation also established an ongoing scholarship program providing $15,000 to local high school seniors pursuing higher education. She wrote Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You in the same mountain voice that took a dirt-poor Sevier County girl to more than 100 million records.
