#MYMODISTORY PM Narendra Modi ji has always inspired people to look beyond themselves and work for a larger cause. When I won my first Grammy Award in 2015, one year after he became the Prime Minister, I wished to meet him. Soon after, I received a call from his office and my wish came true. Man, this one's gonna be a tough one. Losing a friend and our adopted Bosnian cuts deep. I met Paul in 2019. when we worked on a broadcast project together, unpacking forgotten war crimes in Sarajevo and Bijeljina. This is for you, Paul! | paullowe We lost more than a photographer when #PaulLowe passed away. We lost a witness to our history, a storyteller who showed the world the truths that many wished to ignore. His lens captured more than the horrors of war; it captured the resilience, the survival, the humanity of #Sarajevo at its darkest moment. Paul wasn’t just any outsider. He became one of us, a Bosnian in spirit, returning to live in Sarajevo with his Bosnian wife he met during war. He chose to make this city, scarred but beautiful, his home. In a way, his life mirrored his photography; an intimate connection to our brokenness, but yet utter fucking resilience. His work during the siege was not just about documenting violence. It was about remembering – reminding us that the shattered buildings and the jagged remains of barricades held stories, stories we should never forget. Paul understood that the “textures of destruction,” as he called them, were not just remnants of the past, but warnings and lessons for the future. He spent six months after the war capturing the ruins, not as mere structures, but as symbols of what had been lost and what we must fight to preserve – our history, our humanity. Through his eyes, even devastation carried a haunting, “terrifying beauty,” a strange aesthetic that was both painful and necessary to see. For those of us who knew him, Paul wasn’t just a great artist. He was a kind soul, a man who cared deeply for the people and the stories he photographed. It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of Britt Allcroft. The Allcroft-Wright family has asked me to bring this news to the Thomas fandom. A full obituary will be released in the London Times later today. The family is currently in mourning and asks that their privacy be respected at this time. Britt was an adoring mother and wife. A visionary producer. She brought so much joy and happiness to people everywhere during her time on Earth. Over the years of knowing Britt, we developed a close connection. It was truly a privilege to have her as both a mentor and a friend, and I’m so glad that so many fans were able to meet her at the New York screening of “An Unlikely Fandom”. It was an absolute honor to have her in our documentary, and she has since remained a vocal supporter of our cause. I think I can speak for the entirety of the fandom when I say that all of us will deeply miss her. Without her, so many of us would never have met. As a way to honor Britt's legacy, her family as asked that you consider making a charitable donation to your local chapter of the ASPCA in Britt's name. Secure attachment during infancy lays the foundation for our lifelong mental and physical health. As I wind down this week’s series on infant/toddler attachment, I wanted to conclude with a few final words about why it matters so much. Obviously, strong relational connections between parents and children are beneficial in and of themselves. But there’s more to it than that. Attachment grounds and shapes our long-term mental health as well as our ability to enter into positive relationships with others. You see, children who are securely attached tend to be just that: Secure. This allows them to navigate the world independently, with confidence in themselves and their abilities. It almost seems contradictory that independence would spring from dependence. But it most surely does. The more love and care children receive during their earliest months and years and the more attentively and predictably their needs are met by treasured loved ones, the more they experience the world as safe place. And this is a gift to both the brain and the body. When the human body is not flooded daily with stress hormones and when anxiety occurs - not as a constant state - but more occasionally in response to life’s challenges, not only are we better prepared to deal with it - but our bodies don’t bear the long-term burden of a constant stress response. This is a fascinating area of early development that we are still only beginning to fully understand, but suffice it to say that positive early experiences - both in the home and in conjunction with high quality early education and care programs- are increasingly linked to lifelong health. This brain-body connection has huge implications not only for individual children, but for our public policy. A tweet is hardly the place to unpack this conversation in full, but know that my new book, The Daycare Myth (which can be ordered from the link in my bio) explores in detail the disconnect between what we know about the science of early development and how it is enacted (or, more frequently, not enacted) in our public policy. The costs - both developmentally and economically - are astronomical. And not only to individuals, but to taxpayers - who would be far better served by making small investments in getting things right in the first place than paying for the results of our inaction across the lifespan.
