“Double me!” You know I can’t resist a good language development video, which is why this one from shshshayla on TT jumped right to the top my list for sharing this week. As mom tries to introduce little Willow to the letters in her name, Willow brings a huge... wealth of knowledge to the table… which makes mom’s task slightly more challenging! Told the first letter is “W,” Willow understands mom to be saying “double you” - and correctly restates it as “double me!” When that doesn’t meet mom’s approval, she tries a slightly different - but entirely reasonable response: “double baby Willow!” What clever - and fantastic - responses! And what a perfect example of the complexity of toddlers’ task as they acquire language.show more

Love it, so cute, do people not use phonetic language when teaching children letters? This is wuh, wuh for willow, wuh for winter, wuh for wiggle. I might need to know this in future, that's the reason I'm asking!

Are you okay? ✅ Do you have self-control? ❌ I can’t quite decide what I love more about this video: mom’s expert modeling of how to de-escalate after a meltdown, or this little guy’s delightfully honest response. Like most things, the development of emotional regulation is something that begins in a shared space between you and your child. Look how mom provides instruction on how to calm big feelings - coaching her son to breathe and count. This is a fantastic example of learning in what we call the “zone of proximal development” - which is the area just beyond what your child can do independently. With mom’s co-regulation, however, he manages to return to a state of calm. As for self-control, have no fear. It’s what comes next! This fantastic interaction was shared to IG by sharonadrake.

You’ve heard of Miami, but what about “Your Ami?” As they grow as language learners young children are called upon to assimilate a staggering amount of information. Vocabulary. Grammar. Figures of speech. The list goes on... And occasionally something your child don’t yet know helps to shine a spotlight on all that they DO know. Such is the case here. I just love this little one, who interprets her mother’s references to Miami (Florida) as “my Ami.” Quizzed on the family’s plans for the day, she explains - correctly, depending on who’s asking - that they are going to “your Ami” and “mama’s Ami” - even sharing a plausible explanation as to why she lacks an “Ami” of her own. It’s a lighthearted moment, but also a wonderful window on all she knows as a language learner - successfully changing the possessives to match the adult she is addressing. Such a little genius. And today her vocabulary will grow by at least one as she gets her first exposure to “Miami” as a proper noun. (In reality it will likely grow by even more, with some estimates suggesting young children learn 8-10 new words each day.) This fantastic little language learner was shared to IG by mrs.tanwalker.

I’m always grateful to have left a lasting impact on professional wrestling. Being the first to introduce the double stack finisher, lifting opponents of all sizes for the Double Shell Shock, was an incredible moment. It is now being used in WWE 2K25 as part of double stack finishers. Thank you to all the great people and fans out there for keeping my memory alive. FEED ME MORE!

This young boy tells his mom to chill. Many will say that is this generation’s language, and it is, but, that’s the equivalent of us telling our mom to calm down. I don’t know about you but I would never have told my mom to calm down. 😳 Others have said why not let the mom handle it? Family dynamics- the dad used to be the disciplinarian when I was growing up. It doesn’t mean that mom can’t handle it. But, the father is letting his son know that he will not tolerate rude or disrespectful behavior towards mom, his wife. I liked the way the dad took charge. 💯 What do you think of the way the dad jumped in and handled it? 🤔

“He’s trying to do it!” You know I love a good “serve and return” video (in which infants and parents engage in back and forth mirroring and extension of one another’s actions). We often see this with vocalizations, but as this fantastic video from brittdipp on TT shows us, this mimicry isn’t limited to speech. Watch as this little one works to mirror his father’s spider-like hand gesture in which he walks his fingers across the table to engage his son. One of the things this video illustrates particularly well is the importance of wait time. This is a complex task for our hero and his “return” is far from instantaneous. It requires real concentration. And you can see his mental gears turning! Watch how carefully he observes his own hand, initially managing to slide it back toward dad with mostly a closed fist. But after dad models once more, baby manages to more closely emulate dad’s model, spreading his little fingers spider-style. Such an observant little guy. And what a cool back and forth between them!

Your baby understands more than you might think. And this is especially true when it comes to language. I’ve written extensively over the years about the gulf between receptive language (that which we understand) and expressive language (that which we can speak), but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any better illustration than this fantastic video, shared with me by Phoebe Arslanagić-Little. In it, her 10-month-old daughter - whose current expressive language is limited mostly to “dada” - correctly identifies 8 African animals, none of which are yet a part of her spoken vocabulary. It’s an amazing illustration of the order in which we acquire language (receptive before expressive) and a powerful reminder that our little ones are taking in the world more extensively than we sometime give them credit for. (This can cut both ways, incidentally, so never assume they aren’t taking in adult content/discussions just because they’re too little. Once that expressive language catches up you might be surprised to discover just how extensive their adult vocabulary can be. 😃). And kudos to grandma, who enabled this - not by drilling our hero on animal names, but by narrating their joint playtimes. Just fantastic!

BAD BODY LANGUAGE SCREAMS!! These clips from Auburns game last week stood out to me as a way to teach our players what it looks like when you have bad body language. As a development coach, I hope this young player learns from it, we all make mistakes as freshman in college… but it’s a great chance for others to see it and learn from it before they choose to do it. Basketball is a team sport. We don’t do a great job in the AAU world and in today’s game of stressing we over me. BASKETBALL IS A TEAM GAME!! YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO BE PART OF A TEAM. And ultimately that means you’ll have to sacrifice individual success. Choose to be a good teammate everyday and bring consistent positive energy and effort, and the universe will reward you!!

But watch and listen carefully and you’ll find that it’s not the voice, but Mom’s own laughter that cues our hero’s delightful response…elevating the situation from interesting to HILARIOUS. Another great reminder that your baby looks to you to help interpret the world; studying your emotional state and facial expressions as a barometer for their own. And what an infectious laugh. Allow your toddler to experience a little frustration. I know that may sound odd, but hear me out. We all face challenges and frustrations in life – and this is especially true of toddlers, who are still developing and refining so many essential skills. Tempting though it may be, eliminating obstacles from your child’s life is not a recipe for success. What we want to build, instead, is resilience – the ability to persevere and succeed, even in the face of difficulty. This involves developing a healthy tolerance for frustration. Not always. And not too much. But a little here and there. As a parent, the key here is to identify situations with just the right amount of challenge… tasks that aren’t beyond your child’s ability, but ones that may require a little analysis, practice, and effort before they find success. Healthy frustration is exactly what this mom is allowing her little one to experience as she explores a piece of playground equipment. When her daughter isn’t initially successful, mom stays nearby… but resists the temptation to intervene, allowing her daughter the time and space to figure things out on her own. And in the end, she manages to do just that. Kudos to mom, lizzy_helloworld, who shared this resilient little one on IG. What advice would you share about raising resilient children?

How does the presence of older siblings influence the development of language? This lovely video brought my mind immediately to research on the topic. There is some consensus that the presence of one or more siblings can correlate with slightly slower* language development among children who are not first born.
