David Friedman had one of his papers rejected by George Stigler himself on the grounds that his paper needed evidence, not just theory. Friedman, the son of the late Milton Friedman, is grateful that the rejection forced him to think more clearly about his theory and how to prove it. We need this kind of rigor back.
