Everybody is talking about recursive self-improvement (RSI) and meta learning. Here is my old 2020 talk about this [1]. It has aged well. Example: humans still define the starts & ends of trials of many modern meta learners. My RSI systems since 1994 LEARN to (re)define them [2]! [1] Meta Learning Machines in a Single Lifelong Trial (talk for workshops at ICML 2020 and NeurIPS 2021, based on earlier talks since 1994). Abstract: the most widely used machine learning algorithms were designed by humans and thus are hindered by our cognitive biases and limitations. Can we also construct meta learning algorithms that can learn better learning algorithms so that our self-improving AIs have no limits other than those inherited from computability and physics? This question has been a main driver of my research since I wrote a thesis on it in 1987 [2]. Here I summarize our work on meta reinforcement learning with self-modifying policies in a single lifelong trial (since 1994), and mathematically optimal meta-learning through the self-referential Gödel Machine (since 2003). Many additional publications on meta-learning since 1987 can be found in the RSI overview [2]. [2] J. Critical Thinking Before Sharing: The Sonam Wangchuk Poster Controversy In the age of viral social media campaigns, a poster by the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) supporting climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has garnered millions of shares. The poster demands saving public education, scrapping the NTA, rejecting the New Education Policy (NEP 2020), and banning NEET, while calling for a protest at Jantar Mantar. However, a closer reading reveals significant inconsistencies. Sonam Wangchuk has repeatedly praised the NEP 2020 for its emphasis on mother-tongue education, experiential learning, and integration of Indian knowledge systems. His own Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) has been recognized as an exemplary implementation of NEP principles. Wangchuk’s recent protests focus on accountability for NEET paper leaks and poor implementation of education reforms not outright rejection of NEP or a blanket ban on NEET. Critics rightly argue that replacing NEET with Class 12 marks-based admissions could worsen inequities. Reforming the National Testing Agency to prevent leaks is more practical than eliminating competitive testing altogether. AISF, a left-wing student organization with communist ideological roots, often participates in broader protests. While student voices matter, overlaying unrelated political agendas on genuine education concerns can undermine public trust and support. Emotional appeals and celebrity images can obscure facts. Genuine education reform requires evidence-based solutions stronger institutions, transparency, and proper implementation rather than misleading slogans. Today marks a transformative milestone in Zimbabwe’s education journey. I am pleased to announce that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, in partnership with UNICEF Zimbabwe, is launching the One Laptop, One iPad Per Pupil initiative an ambitious, nationwide programme aimed at bridging the digital divide and empowering every learner with the tools of the 21st century. As part of this initiative, I had the honour of presiding over the official handover of a major consignment of ICT devices, including laptops, projectors, and tablets. These resources are specifically targeted at disadvantaged and solar-powered schools across the country. They will support digital teaching and learning, ensuring that no child is left behind in our pursuit of inclusive, equitable, and quality Education. This programme is not merely about technology it is about equity, opportunity, and transformation. It is about unlocking the potential of every learner, regardless of geography or background, and ensuring that our education system is relevant, inclusive, and future-ready. We pay tribute to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, whose visionary leadership under Vision 2030, the Presidential Computerisation Programme, and the promotion of public-private partnerships continue to drive innovation and inclusive development across all sectors, including Education. By placing a laptop and an iPad in the hands of every pupil, we are not only investing in their future we are building the digital foundations of a knowledge-based economy. This is a bold step toward realising the aspirations of Vision 2030 and preparing our children for a world increasingly shaped by technology, creativity, and innovation. Hon'ble MP Dr Kanimozhi NVN Somu said that there's nothing for Tamil Nadu in the #ViksitBharatBudget. I want to highlight what Tamil Nadu did get in this budget: ✅High-Speed Rail: Chennai is a major node with two bullet train corridors - Hyderabad–Chennai and Chennai–Bengaluru. ✅Rare Earth Corridors: Tamil Nadu is explicitly named for dedicated rare-earth corridors. ✅Adichanallur Heritage Development: Adichanallur (Thoothukudi) is selected among 15 sites for experiential heritage development with conservation labs and curated public access. ✅Eco-Tourism Trails: Budget announces bird-watching trails at Pulicat Lake and mountain trails at Podhigai Malai. ✅The Coconut Promotion Scheme will be introduced to replace "old and non-productive trees" with new high-yielding saplings in major growing states, inclusive of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. ✅Fisheries: Duty-free high-seas fishing and tripled duty-free input limits (1%→3%) for seafood processing, boosting coastal Tamil Nadu incomes and exports. ✅Textiles: Modernisation & employment programme + Samarth 2.0 skilling for Tirupur/Coimbatore garment clusters. ✅Leather & Footwear: Duty-free inputs extended to shoe uppers and export window extended to 1 year, directly cutting costs for Ambur/Vaniyambadi/Chennai exporters. ✅Automobile & EV: Customs exemptions on capital goods for lithium-ion cells and critical mineral processing, strengthening Chennai–Hosur EV ecosystems. ✅Girls’ Hostels: One hostel per district - 38 hostels for Tamil Nadu. ✅City Economic Regions: ₹5,000 crore per CER - Tamil Nadu’s urban agglomerations (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai) can all be contenders. ✅Regional Medical Hubs: As India’s healthcare capital, Chennai is well-placed to secure one of five hubs combining care, education, research, and AYUSH. ✅University Townships: Tamil Nadu can bid along CBIC/CKIC corridors, linking universities with industry. From North South University, Dhaka 🇧🇩 At North South University, I addressed brilliant students and distinguished faculty on a defining question of our era: how Pakistan and Bangladesh — two of the youngest nations in the world — can transform demographic energy into enduring economic strength. With over 60% of our populations under 35, our shared realities are clear: Rapid urbanisation. Expanding higher education. Export-led ambition. Labour market transitions. Climate vulnerability. Engaging with the bright young minds of NSU, we reflected on how the Fourth Industrial Revolution — AI, automation, digital trade, and climate technologies — is reshaping economies and redefining opportunity. The future of our region will not be determined by past ruptures, but by the innovation, skills, and ambition of our youth. History reminds us that nations rise when knowledge and unity converge — and decline when fragmentation prevails. My message to the students was clear: New worlds are created by new ideas. Collaboration is strategic — not sentimental. And the destiny of nations lies in the hands of individuals. Grateful for the gracious welcome by the Chairman, Vice Chancellor, distinguished faculty, and the enthusiastic students whose energy reflects the promise of our region.
