Tariffs and other consumption taxes are usually less damaging to an economy than personal and corporate income taxes since income taxes hurt investment more than consumption ones. Many of todayโ€™s tariff critics had no objections to raising the corporate tax despite that being even more damaging to the economy and affecting most goods and services not just imports. Tariffs are also better than sales taxes in some ways, since they are often more targeted and because the producer often ends up paying for part of the tariff cost.
