If I had to pick Capcom’s greatest 2D beat ’em up, my choices would easily be Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Alien vs. Predator. Capcom’s original beat ‘em ups are fantastic, but there’s something even more exciting about seeing the company work with iconic licensed franchises. The idea of humans and Predators joining forces to fight the Aliens is simply too good to fail. Everything about this game is top-notch—the graphics, sound, controls, and even its faithful recreation of the atmosphere from the films. It’s a true masterpiece of the genre. Sadly, because of licensing issues, it was never released on home consoles, making it one of Capcom’s most disappointing “what could have been” titles.

Classic WoW was meant to launch with FIFTY (50) dungeons and raids. The content had been planned out from the very beginning, from the concepts to the lore. But as the deadline to launch came closer, reality set in.. HALF of the dungeons/raids were cut from the final release, including Grim Batol, Hyjal, Kara, a Stratholme raid (!?), Karazhan RAID (on top of the Kara dungeon), a wild west Tauren leveling dungeon, and a dungeon under Ironforge. Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (1993 by SSI) As an old school Dungeons & Dragons pen and paper fan since the mid 80s, I played pretty much every RPG out there for a while. When Dark Sun was released, I was hooked instantly. I know the SSI Gold Box games were maybe a bit too "nerdy" for some, maybe too much dungeon crawling, grinding, leveling - not really for a casual gamer. Dark Sun had different approach, a higher focus on the interface and controls (superbly done) and more role-playing elements, maybe in an attempt to draw in more mainstream users at the time. It even got an MMORPG version in 1996, one of the very first, but sadly shut down again in 1999. For a game that's over 30 years old the graphics still blow me away.

You can also 'possess' certain enemy characters and use their own move set, which is quite unique in this genre. A hidden gem that was never ported to home systems.

Street Fighter II was a massive hit in arcades, but even before that, Final Fight was already incredibly popular. At the time, rumors were circulating that the game would be ported to PC, so when it was suddenly announced for the Super Famicom, it came as a huge shock. Although Guy was missing and two-player co-op wasn’t supported, the mere fact that we could play Final Fight at home felt like a blessing in itself. Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). Considering that the arcade version had more than twice that amount of data, it seems clear that these limitations led to those difficult compromises. Beat ’em up games were already popular in arcades before Final Fight, but after its release, the genre truly boomed, eventually leading to Capcom’s finest belt-scrolling action titles—culminating in Dungeons & Dragons, the pinnacle of their beat ’em up legacy.
