"The Calhoun Shot" or "the Immaculate Connection" - were nicknames for a shot made by spectator Don Calhoun during a timeout in the third quarter of a Chicago Bulls - Miami Heat game on April 14, 1993. The shot was part of a promo that offered 1 million dollars to any fan who could make a 75-foot shot from the free-throw line at the opposite end of the court. The insurance company, American Hole 'N One Inc, voided the payment due to the fact that Calhoun had played college basketball, a violation of the rules. Fan and player outrage over non-payment to Calhoun grew palpable, however, and the sponsors (which include Coca-Cola and the Bulls) honored the payment. Calhoun got $50,000 a year over the next 20 years. Calhoun said Michael Jordan would later say, "we made them pay it".

20 Years Ago Today (March 26, 2005) Washington HS senior center Luke Zeller swished a half-court shot at the overtime horn to give his team a 74-72 triumph over Plymouth in the #IHSAA Class 3A state championship game in front of a sellout crowd of 18,345 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Plymouth had taken a 72-71 lead on a lay-up by freshman guard Randy Davis with two seconds left in overtime. Zeller just missed a triple-double, finishing with game-highs of 27 points, nine rebounds, and a Class 3A-record 11 assists. His heroics earned WHS Athletics its fourth state title and first since 1942. With Chris Denari, Dave Nicholson, and Chuck Freeby Sports on the call, this play also appeared on ESPN's Top 10 Plays of the Day! ESPNAssignmentDesk #SCtop10

Shoutout to Rick Brunson. Who else noticed this? On the first possession of the third quarter, CJ McCollum was hit with a technical for kicking Brunson in his twig and berries. (After the game, McCollum claimed JB was acting ”on Broadway,” which was bizarre considering he clearly hit Brunson in a very sensitive area.) After the refs announce that NY will be awarded a free throw, Rick heads over to Jalen. It’s unclear whether he asked Jalen if he felt physically fine, or whether the veteran NY assistant coach simply realized that KAT could benefit from seeing a shot drop. (As a reminder, Towns struggled in the first half, shooting just 1-of-6 from the floor in the first.) JB nods approvingly. Towns steps to the stripe and knocks down the free throw. A minute later, KAT drills a three-pointer from the corner (off a Brunson assist) and is off to the races. Towns finished the second half with 19 points (5-of-7 from the floor, 3-of-3 from downtown and 6-of-6 from the FT line).

The Washington Wizards okayed a prank at a game. They pretended to pick a fan to throw a half court shot blindfolded for a chance to win $10,000. Everyone involved was in on it, this was all staged. So when the “fan” missed, they pretended he made it and won the money, only to review the footage and then take the money back because he missed. The fans were upset because they thought the team cheated another fan out of money even though he clearly missed. Do you think next time they should just do it for real and let an actual fan take the shot?

We played with Texas for a half on the road in front of a crowd of 10,993 people. It was a 3 point game with 2:08 remaining in the first half. A pair of second half 12-0 runs for the Longhorns put the game away as we got wore down by the size, strength, and NBA level talent of the #19 ranked team in country. It was a great environment for our student-athletes to compete in. We will continue to work in growing the HCU program as we also play nationally ranked power programs Creighton (#15) and Texas A&M (#13) this season. #DawgsUp

Horry inbounded the ball to Manu Ginobili, who got cornered by two Detroit defenders. Ginobili passed the ball back to Horry on the left wing, and in typical Horry fashion he buried a three-pointer with 5.9 seconds left to give the Spurs a 96-95 win and 3-2 series lead. Along with the game-winning shot, Horry scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to carry the Spurs to victory. The Spurs won the series and Horry received his sixth NBA championship.

A fan of the Chicago Bulls successfully made a remarkable shot during a 1993 game, winning a million-dollar prize. This shot, nicknamed "The Calhoun Shot" or "The Immaculate Connection," occurred when spectator Don Calhoun made a 75-foot shot from the free-throw line at the opposite end of the court during a timeout in the third quarter of a Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat game on April 14, 1993. The shot was part of a promotional campaign offering a million-dollar reward to any fan who could achieve this feat. However, an insurance company named American Hole 'N One Inc initially invalidated the payment, citing a technicality due to Calhoun's past involvement in college basketball, which violated the contest rules. Despite this setback, both fan and player uproar ensued over the non-payment to Calhoun. Eventually, the sponsors of the promotion, including Coca-Cola and the Bulls, decided to honor the payment. As a result, Calhoun received $50,000 annually for the next two decades, totaling the promised million-dollar prize. Interestingly, Calhoun mentioned that Michael Jordan later remarked, "we made them pay it," referring to the collective effort that led to the sponsors fulfilling the payment.

Mike Brown on the officiating in Game 3 of the NBA Finals 👀 "I never thought I'd be in the NBA Finals and see a team get 24 free throw attempts in the second half to another team's 8... I don't think I complain much about officials... And maybe we were fouling, but they fouled too." (via Kris Pursiainen)

Yesterday was a day of basketball for the Doty family. It started with a 6:30 AM wake up call as our first grader, Amery, coached by her momma and a former D1 athlete fellow mom, played an 8:00 AM game at our church in Sugar Land. Amery has worked really hard over the past months. She scored three baskets all of last season. She made six shots in yesterday’s game alone (see video for a few of her makes). Our son Braylon, a junior in high school, coached his third grade team at 2:00 PM at the church. His team has won some games and he said, “Maybe I should get into coaching for a career.” I think he should keep his lofty goals of becoming a US diplomat or going into medicine 😆. I’m just glad he is enjoying running practices and helping the youth develop through this volunteer opportunity. At 3:30 PM our Houston Christian University team tipped off a Southland Conference game in Houston. We got the win so Alexys and Braylon weren’t the only winning coaches in the family like previous weekends. In all seriousness, our players played an incredible second half and earned an important victory.

JUST IN: The Wizards have issued an apology after they appeared to have pranked a fan into thinking he won $10,000 by pretending he made a blindfolded half-court shot. The Wizards say the skit was scripted and all participants were in on the joke. "We apologize for last night's April Fools' joke that left many wondering if we had misled a fan. The skit involving our mascot and other members of our performance team was scripted and intended to celebrate the day," they said. "All participants were in on the joke, but we missed the mark. Our fans are our priority, and we continue to be committed to providing a positive experience to all who attend our games."

Don't forget how hard the refs tried to extend the NBA Finals. It's like the league watched the Knicks win the first two on the road and realized San Antonio didn't have a fair shot, and decided to help. Game 3: 24 free throws to 8 in the second half. 14-3 in the third alone. The Knicks in the penalty for the final 9:18 at home. They still only lost by four. Game 4 they went down 29 and won it anyway. You can tilt a whistle. You can't tilt a team that good.

On this date 21 years ago, Alabama Men’s Basketball stunned the nation when the Crimson Tide rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half to upset No. 1-seeded Stanford, 70-67, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Seattle on March 20, 2004. Kennedy Winston scored 21 points for the No. 8-seeded Crimson Tide, which made 10 of 14 free throws in the final minutes to secure the victory in the West Regional. Led by Pac-10 Player of the Year Josh Childress, the Cardinal entered the game with an impressive 30-1 record and with 7:40 remaining in the second half had built a comfortable 53-40 lead, before Alabama mounted its incredible comeback with a 16-0 run. Earnest Shelton helped spark the Crimson Tide rally and finished with 14 points, while Chuck Davis and Antoine Pettway each had 12 points. Childress scored 12 points for the top-seeded team in the Phoenix (West) Region but fouled out with 3:18 left and watched the final minutes in dismay from the end of the Stanford bench. “They weren’t overrated. We were underrated,” read a sign in the Alabama locker room. The shocking victory earned a “Sports Illustrated” cover the following week and propelled the Crimson Tide, coached by Mark Gottfried, to its first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1991.

🤔How many other one-goal wonders can you name for Everton?! Lacina Traoré, one goal and just 60 minutes on the pitch as an Everton player! OTD back in 2014, the Ivorian forward joined on loan and scored on his debut in a 3-1 FA Cup win over Swansea. He made just one more appearance as a second-half substitute in the final game of that season.

The Raiders are off to an incredible start and I have no doubt that Klint Kubiak will have the team continuing to play great. This sequence by their game management staff very easily could have lost them the game. On 3rd and 7, Justin Herbert gets hit while throwing, and they rule it a fumble that is recovered by the Chargers and brings up 4th and a half yard. Replays showed Herbert with the ball and his arm moving forward, and Gene Steratore noted that this should be an incompletion. The broadcast correctly was very surprised by the lack of challenge. The swing from 4th and 7 vs. 4th and a half yard is enormous here. For some reason, the coach appeared to not get the message to challenge the play. Not challenging likely cost them over 5% win probability. The Raiders then call a timeout, which is inexplicable in this moment, as you should throw the challenge flag if you plan on calling a timeout anyways. To top it off, they come out of the timeout on 4th and a half yard with 12 men on the field and give up a free 1st down. This simply cannot happen, someone should see it upstairs and communicate that immediately. The penalty mistake cost them another 20% in win probability! There will be very few game management sequences all year that decrease a team's chance of winning so much. Some things to iron out going forward.
