The Lagos State Government will undertake enforcement action to remove over 100 shanties at Adeniji Adele underbridge from tomorrow, Monday, 6th of May, 2024. The removal is coming after the expiration of a 48-hour removal notice served on all occupants of the shanties to move with their belongings. And operatives of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI/LAGESC) and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) department of the ministry will be given security backup to conduct the operation. This exercise is part of the avowed commitment of the present administration under Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reclaim all ungoverned spaces that dot the Lagos landscape. Unsightly shanties which are located in the heart of Lagos Island represent a distorted image of what a smart city like Lagos should be. Apart from the unsanitary conditions of residents in the shanties, it also serves as a hiding place for criminals and points for peddling hard drugs and substances which is injurious to the wellbeing of law-abiding residents. Today, I led an inspection of the Obalende underbridge and motor park area, where the Lagos State Government has issued an immediate quit notice to squatters occupying the space. This is not a sudden action. Notices were issued as far back as 2024, and we are now moving to redesign the area into a clean, safe, and functional public space. The location will be handed over to a private sector partner for redevelopment and long-term maintenance as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. The proposed design includes a motor garage, public toilets, sleeping bays, and electric vehicle charging points. Our objective is to end environmental degradation, remove criminal elements, and ensure that underbridge spaces serve the public in a sustainable way. I also inspected Oja Oba on Lagos Island and the Adeniji–Ilubirin loop as part of our broader effort to put open spaces to proper and productive use across the state. Let me reiterate that our environmental laws on street trading and illegal waste disposal remain fully in force.
