The budget has doubled over the last decade, 2.5 times the rate of inflation. And we know that there is a huge amount of fraud going on in the budget that no one has even scratched the surface of. Newsom has vetoed audits that would get to the bottom of some of that fraud. Why would you ever do that? We need audits. Before you propose new and unprecedented taxes, I think you have an obligation to taxpayers to make sure that their money is being well spent. The first place to look is with all this fraud. We've seen it in Minnesota. We all know the fraud is there. Root that out first before you go back to taxpayers for more and drive job creators out of the state.

Homeowners face an average 5.5% tax increase next year—and for condo owners, it’s an even steeper 10.5%. I couldn’t support another increase in taxes. Instead of delivering real relief for families and businesses, the budget approved by the majority of #yyccc yesterday prioritizes bureaucracy over solutions. Alongside four of my colleagues, I brought forward several amendments to cut unnecessary spending—like reducing the $6.5M executive leadership budget and holding senior management accountable for extravagant travel expenses. Unfortunately, these were rejected. Calgarians deserve transparency. To fix this broken process, I proposed re-establishing the Finance and Budget Committee to ensure every dollar is accounted for and scrutinized. Again, the majority of this Council didn't want to roll up their sleeves and do this work. While I supported funding to keep the Inglewood Pool open, waiving patio fees for small businesses, and investing in critical services like public safety and infrastructure, Calgarians still want The City to do more with less while The City does less with more. I’ll continue fighting for responsible spending and transparent leadership. Calgarians deserve better. This isn’t over.

The House Budget actually does a job of trying to get to budget neutrality, balancing tax policy and spending policy. Mayor Mamdani announced today that he balanced the NYC budget by being bailed out by Gov. Hochul. Billions of dollars from New York State are now going to NYC instead of helping New Yorkers outside the failing city. Last nights budget has revealed the Federal budget has serious structural spending issues that need to be addressed urgently. Labor has allowed deficits to occur out to 2035/36. Why should the Australian public take Labor seriously on economic management when it can’t even rein in deficits over a period of a decade? If Australia was a business that forecast losses for the next decade it would be declared bankrupt and receivers appointed. Why should the Australian public vote for a government that can’t stimulate an economy back into profit given Australia’s vast resources and economic potential! At the start of this term I had a meeting with the Treasurer Jim Chalmers, as I did with former Treasurer Frydenberg where I outlined a number of loopholes in the tax and monetary policy settings that favoured foreign investors. I wanted to share an update on San Francisco’s budget and how we are working to get our fiscal house in order. When I took office, we inherited a significant structural deficit. That means the city was set up to spend more money than it brings in, year after year. Today, that gap is projected to reach $1 billion dollars over the next five years. Over the past year, we’ve taken steps to close this gap and bring long-term spending more in line with revenue. We also know that increasing sustainable revenue for our city is crucial to solving our budget problem. Since the day I became mayor, we’ve been taking steps to create the conditions for San Francisco’s economic recovery. Today, our streets are safer and cleaner, and people struggling on the streets are getting into treatment. We’re making it easier to open and operate a small business in our city. And that progress has led to results: Businesses of all sizes are coming back to San Francisco, people are shopping downtown again, and tax revenues are higher than projected. While we are making meaningful progress, we are not out of the woods. Our economic recovery is very fragile. And since last year’s budget, the city has faced new federal and state funding cuts. This means our budget gap would reach $1 billion in the coming years if we don’t act. I wanted to share an update on San Francisco’s budget and how we are working to get our fiscal house in order. When I took office, we inherited a significant structural deficit. That means the city was set up to spend more money than it brings in, year after year. Today, that gap is projected to reach $1 billion dollars over the next five years. Over the past year, we’ve taken steps to close this gap and bring long-term spending more in line with revenue. We also know that increasing sustainable revenue for our city is crucial to solving our budget problem. Since the day I became mayor, we’ve been taking steps to create the conditions for San Francisco’s economic recovery. Today, our streets are safer and cleaner, and people struggling on the streets are getting into treatment. We’re making it easier to open and operate a small business in our city. And that progress has led to results: Businesses of all sizes are coming back to San Francisco, people are shopping downtown again, and tax revenues are higher than projected. While we are making meaningful progress, we are not out of the woods. Our economic recovery is very fragile. And since last year’s budget, the city has faced new federal and state funding cuts. This means our budget gap would reach $1 billion in the coming years if we don’t act.
