'ALLIANCE OF SAHEL STATES IS A BEACON OF HOPE' The historic Conference in Solidarity with the Peoples of the Sahel took place 19-21 November in Niamey, the capital of Niger. Hundreds of participants gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Centre from popular movements and organisations across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United States to express solidarity with the people of the Sahel, an arid region south of the Sahara Desert. In a powerful speech during the event, Jonis Ghedi Alasow, the executive director of Pan-Africanism Today, coordinator of its secretariat and one of the conference organisers, described the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as a beacon of hope for states that were once under France's oppressive rule. However, even after the end of formal colonialism, most French-speaking African countries were forced to use the France-controlled CFA franc currency. Between 2021 and 2023, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger—with the support of their populations—expelled Western-aligned governments through coups d’état and demanded the withdrawal of French troops from their territories. These countries faced isolation from their Western-aligned neighbours, particularly the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which imposed sanctions in response. To further defend their territories against the scourge of terrorism that Western military occupations had not stopped, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger united to form the AES confederation, an anti-imperialist bloc that shares defence, economic and foreign policies. It plans to move toward becoming a federation, with the goal of continental unification. EU CHIEF SAYS EUROPE MUST UP GAME IN AFRICA Former colonialists and neo-imperialists just can’t leave Africa alone, can they? In this 2023 video, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen calls for more European involvement in the Sahel and urges for a new strategic partnership with our continent. She predicted more instability in the Sahel as a result of the revolutionary coups, which overthrew Western-aligned rulers. She ignored the fact that the citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger were overwhelmingly in support of the anti-imperialist revolutions in their countries. She would have the world believe that the legacies of French colonialism and US imperialism in Africa are not a factor in the ejection of Western troops and diplomats from the Sahel. Von der Leyen betrays neo-colonialist European plans for Africa by saying that the European Union will work with ‘legitimate governments and organisations in Africa,’ diplomatic-speak for African leaders in the pocket of imperialists. For context, in 2024, the EU and European member states provided $370 million of the total African Union (AU) budget of $605 million. And in 2023, French president Emmanuel Macron lobbied the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intervene militarily in Niger, which ousted the West’s puppet president Mohamed Bazoum and kicked out French troops and diplomats. Could von der Leyen’s call for partnerships, which includes the much-touted €150 billion Global Gateway Investment Package for Africa, be a Trojan horse to entrench neo-colonialism in our continent? Breaking 🚨 - The AES officially withdraws from ECOWAS. Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, Mali 🇲🇱 and Niger 🇳🇪 in a joint statement have officially announced their withdrawal from this useless, corrupt and hijacked organization called Ecowas - Cedeao. Here is what @Colonel_Maiga is reading: “Eager to achieve integration between the States of the sub-region and driven by the motives of fraternity, solidarity, mutual aid, peace and development, Their Excellencies General Aboubacar Sangoulé Lamizana, General Moussa Traoré and Lieutenant -Colonel Seyni Kountché, respectively Heads of State of Upper Volta (current Burkina Faso), Mali and Niger, created with twelve (12) of their peers, on May 28, 1975, in Lagos, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). After 49 years of existence, the valiant people of Burkina, Mali and Niger note with great regret, bitterness and great disappointment that their Organization has moved away from the ideals of its founding fathers and from Pan-Africanism. Furthermore, ECOWAS, under the influence of foreign powers, betraying its founding principles, has become a threat to its member states and its populations whose happiness it is supposed to ensure. Indeed, the organization has not provided assistance to our States in the context of our existential fight against terrorism and insecurity; worse, when these States decided to take their destiny into their own hands, it adopted an irrational and unacceptable posture by imposing illegal, illegitimate, inhumane and irresponsible sanctions in violation of its own texts; all things which have further weakened populations already bruised by years of violence imposed by instrumentalized and remote-controlled terrorist hordes. Faced with this continuing situation, Their Excellencies, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Colonel Assimi Goïta and Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, respectively Heads of State of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger, taking all their responsibilities in the face of history and responding to the expectations, concerns and aspirations of their populations, decide in complete sovereignty on the immediate withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States. Done in Ouagadougou, Bamako and Niamey, January 28th, 2024.” Now, this withdrawal has so many implications given we have our foreign nationals within ECOWAS and they also do have theirs in our three states. This will mean that the AES must quickly form the confederation with its single currency and a passport common to our three countries since we will no longer be able to use the ECOWAS passport. If you see that this joint declaration has been made, it means that our common currency might even be ready already. ECOWAS is for economic integration even if they aspire to be a federal political entity in the long run. But it is clear that they are now corrupt and working against Africa. As I’m writing this, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Alassane Ouattara and the Algerian army chief of staff are all in Paris to see how to destabilize the AES. So what is the point of remaining in such a dead organization which has been hijacked by the imperialists? This withdrawal was predictable and long awaited. Man, this is the biggest news we have been looking and waiting for! This is going to be good. What a joy! What a happy day! Oh how I’m bursting with joy and happiness! Now, it’s time to move on with our confederation! They also state that the College of Heads of State of the AES notes with regret that within ECOWAS, destabilization maneuvers are regularly initiated by a handful of Heads of State who impose their wishes and foreign agendas on the rest of the organization. In addition to these activities, there are operations to reorganize and regroup terrorist groups in the Lake Chad Basin, in the Sahel and in certain border areas, namely: Niger-Nigeria: Niger-Benin: Niger-Burkinn: Benin-Burkina. These receive various forms of support from foreign states, including financial and logistical resources, aimed at destabilizing the AES. Given the seriousness of these ends, the College of Heads of State of the Confederation: 1. Decides to place the defense and security forces on maximum alert; 2. Decides to make the confederal space a single theater of military operations, coexisting with the current national military theaters; 3. Calls on the populations of the AES to redouble their vigilance; to systematically denounce any suspicious act to the security forces; and to reject proposals for enlistment in terrorist groups. The College of Heads of State reiterates its commitment to pursue with determination the fight of the People of the AES for their true sovereignty and dignity.
