You cannot build a genuine relationship with someone unless they see the real you and believe that the real you genuinely cares about them. The temptation for every coach is to tell players what they want to hear so they will like you, rather than telling them what they need to hear because you are afraid they might not. The best coaches are willing to risk being disliked in the moment to help a player become better in the future. They do not lead for approval. They lead from a place of deep care. ❤️ They are willing to put their reputation at risk, have uncomfortable conversations and reject the label of a “players’ coach” if that is what it takes to get the best out of the people they are responsible for leading. Sports may be a competitive entertainment business, but every business will always come down to the people you are building with.
