ERC-4337 in a nutshell: • UserOperations enable smart wallets with intent-based transactions. • Bundlers batch & execute transactions, covering gas upfront. • Paymasters let users transact without paying gas fees. • Improves UX but has gas inefficiencies.

ERC-4337: Key Issues • High gas overhead from 4337 inefficiencies • Fragmentation cross-chain: different bundlers, paymasters, and smart wallets. • Complex dev experience: dApps & infra struggle with integration. • Adoption lags: UserOps are just ~1.5–2% of Base’s txs.

User onboarding: • Sign a transaction to attach smart contract code to the EOA. • Use smart wallet features like batching & gas sponsorship. • Update or remove code anytime—EOA remains flexible.

EIP-7702 vs. ERC-4337 • No proxies → EOAs run contract code at the same address. • Simpler UX → No new accounts or asset transfers. • Better batching → EOAs bundle txs without bundlers. • Better AA → Smart wallet features at protocol level. • Easier dev integration → No registries, full EOA support. • Bundlers adapt → New validation for upgraded EOAs. • Paymasters flex → No EntryPoint deposits, easier sponsorship. • Still 4337-compatible → Works with existing bundlers & paymasters.

EIP-7702: Impact on Browser vs. Embedded Wallets • Browser wallets (MetaMask, etc.) → Must support SET_TX_CODE_TYPE & adapt to user-managed code changes. • Embedded wallets → Have full control, enabling smart features seamlessly via SDK updates. • Standardized RPCs → Browser wallets must integrate ERC-5792 (batching), ERC-7677 (gas sponsorship) for compatibility. • Seamless UX → Embedded wallets can optimize gasless txs, batching & recovery without added infra complexity.

EIP-7702: Challenges That Remain • Seed phrases still matter → EOAs retain “sudo access.” • State management → EOAs must store data in external contracts. • Storage risks → EOAs modifying state could cause issues. • Code revocation risks → Caution needed for code resets • Replay protection → More complexity to prevent attacks. • Wallet standardization → Needs ERC-5792 adoption. • Competing standards → Apps may override EOA code, causing conflicts. • Session keys → ERC-7715 still in discussion. But the UX gains are worth it!
