Electrical engineer explains why keeping your laptop plugged in is actually better for the battery than constantly charging it. But I always thought it was the other way around.🤔

i always kept my laptop plugged in. now it can work 2 seconds on unplugged battery

Wow

It works that way for most electronics today but using phones while charging will strill degrade the battery faster due to heat rather than stress from charging

Ok

The best way is to use the laptop like a desktop batteryless; and only plug in the battery when the laptop is mobile

So you will have to remove the battery then plug it directly or what

what a coincidence

Wow 😩

How come I’ve had my laptop for eight years, only have 335 cycles, and it’s already saying “service recommended”?

Wow 😕

The problem is heat

Yeah, this is the main problem and efficiency mostly for windows Os

This is for modern devices though.

Bullshit. You need to charge max to 80% and discharge up to 30%. Once a time charge up to 100%. That's healthy. Staying at all times at the charger is extremely unhealthy to the battery. That's why every laptop out of the box is at 70% now, this is the sweet spot for preserving..

Who am I believing now 😭

And BTW with phones it's not the case. Since you can't charge it all the time, phone battery works on cycles all the time. Laptop is the same, it's designed to take and give charge in cycles, not plugging it all the time to the charger...

Wrong... A Lithium ion bat specialist for 12 years, allowing your battery to remain at full SOC (95% and above) is very damaging for your battery's due to thermal agitation in the molecules. Every laptop user knows this. Unless you stop charging at 80% u are good.

Engineer here. It depends on what generation of laptop, and how you configure it. A modern Mac with battery protection modes engaged, it's likely to be fine to leave it plugged in. Batteries last best when held below 95% charge. Laptop makers resisted this mostly, leading to overcharging situations. Some apps like AlDente can let you configure this manually. If you can't have a little buffer, and the machine charges the pack to 100%, that's called overcharging. That leads to bloat that ruins the machine.

Charge the battery to 100%. Store it for a year. Check its shape: if it’s swollen, you’ve got a free pillow for your hamster. Like this:

As a software engineer in any industry you find yourself just be relevant. You can never be replaced by anything 🙂

I don't think that's true. You can find in many sources that keeping a battery at 100% is the worst thing you can do. This is also why some cars, like Tesla, stop charging at 80% by default. I bought an iPad from an outlet, and it turned out to be from a display. After a little over a year, the battery was more degraded than in my 13-year-old device.

The best is keeping it plugged but have a charge limiter that keeps it under 80%. Minimum stress for the battery. I have my mac since 2022 and the battery still lasts a day.

In tech, every hour you dedicate to learning is a step toward a better future.

as an electronics engineer i’d say you forget about heat dissipation. especially with iphone, as you use your device it will raise up the temps and if you also charge it then the temp would accumulate from the charging process+usage heat. it will still degrade your battery faster

Same here, I always thought keeping the charger in would cook the battery. Turns out the real damage comes from constantly draining it and then charging it again. When it stays plugged in, the battery just chills. Unplug it all day, and you’re basically forcing it to run a marathon for no reason.

On MacBook use battery toolkit and set battery to 50% for constant desktop usage. 100% battery state of charge long term degrades the battery faster than a 50% SOC (state of charge) storage voltage.

im confused

Am also confused 🧐

Mid explanation. Battery engineer here. Stop charging at 80% if you want your stuff to last

Its a myth I can assure.I have a brand new mac M2 (2 years old) always on charge. When I take it out and work outside, its hardly 1.5 hours. Completely drained to zero. Its purely office use laptop and no nonsense.

A tree that stays rooted in good soil grows stronger than one that is constantly replanted. Sometimes what seems harmful at first is actually the way to keep strength and life lasting longer.

what if they told us this to make us destroy our own products so we had to get new 1's....

I thought this was obvious? Running the batteries through cycles degrades it over time, but with the AC adapter, it bypasses the battery. On a meta level actually not that complicated.

and about side-effects that make the screen pinkish and useless .

How sure are you

personal experience . i did search on internet .

@folaoftech No side effects on my 2012 MacBook Pro and running, the hell are you using?

@folaoftech hp 2016 model

Because lithium BMS doesn't "trickle charge" like older battery types.

At 100% resistance is off the roof, very stressfull. All lithium polymer battery have a burst voltage only for when they are a full charge..discharging them reduce the stress on the chip by a large threshold.. Same stress is also applied at very low charge. 0-20% and 100-80%.

Laptop tips

Battery management has been there for a long time. But before it gets better and battery itself gets better, stop charging manually is still good. Not a myth

Have you ever found yourself trying to explain your job to parents or relatives who don’t understand anything about tech? Tech struggles 😭

@akshansh_777 you were correct

What if we could just easily replace the battery - and then we wouldn't need to be in a constant state of charging anxiety?

Not all devices have a battery management chip that diverts power. Doing so at 80% instead of 100% does increase the lifespan of the battery.

These are for the modern or recent devices?
