Here's Elon Musk explaining why Tesla Robotaxi will be safer than Waymo. David Faber: “Why do you feel that [Tesla's camera-only approach] is going to be the equivalent [to Waymo's with radar and LiDAR] in terms of safety profile?” Elon: “Oh, I think it'll be better. The way that the road system is designed is for intelligence, biological neural nets, and eyes. So what will actually work best for the road system is digital neural nets and cameras. And we also have the microphones so the car can hear emergency vehicles. The whole road system is not designed for shooting lasers out of your eyes. We found that when you have multiple sensors, they tend to get confused. Do you believe the camera, or do you believe the LiDAR? And getting confused is what can lead to accidents. Elon Musk on why you don't need LiDAR in cars: “The road system was not designed for shooting lasers out of your eyes.” David Faber: “Waymo has 28 cameras, they've got LiDAR and radar. You've had a different approach. Eight to nine cameras and the neural network. Why do you feel that that is going to be the equivalent in terms of safety profile?” Elon: “Oh, I think it'll be better. "The reason I founded OpenAI was because I was concerned, based on my conversations with Larry Page, that he was not sufficiently concerned about the dangers of AI. At my birthday party, he, in front of a large group of people, called me a speciesist, for favoring humanity over computers. So after that, I was like, We got to have some counterbalance to Google, because Larry doesn't seem to care if humans make it or not. So I thought, what's the opposite of Google? It would be an open source nonprofit, and that's where the word open, in OpenAI comes from. It means open source. I provided all the money, recruited the key people, and taught them everything I know. I actually even got them to deal with Microsoft. And for all that, I did not seek any financial reward whatsoever. The reason I actually took down the offer for shares is because, I mean, I felt like what are the shares, and why like nonprofits supposed to have shares? Wow. The entire road was closed off due to construction, requiring traffic to take turns driving on the other side of the road. I thought I would have to takeover for sure... but FSD 12.5.6.1 just handled it perfectly on its own. It knows how to go off script.

💬 What changed the most after your debut? 🐹 My mindset changed to be a bit better. 🐹 Before I was thinking, “Wouldn’t I just do this for about 7 years and then stop?” 🐹 But as I kept doing it, it gradually became fun and I became more sincere. 🐹 I’m also very grateful to the fans. And because of that, I thought maybe it would be okay for me to be more sincere. 🐹 I didn’t know I would do this for this long. As I kept doing it, it became fun, so I thought maybe it would be okay to do it seriously, and that feeling actually grew bigger for me over time. 🐹 I just changed to be more positive.

I trust Tesla FSD to drive more than I do myself at this point. Elon Musk says that in 10 years, 90% of the distance driven will be driven by AI in self-driving cars. I believe it. We’ll reach a point where manually driving is universally seen as dangerous.
