Our Umani herd is heading home for the night, with Mwana, Kerrio and Kapei politely jostling for first position! Many of the elephants in this line no longer sleep in the stockades. But the Umani herd is a true unit, choosing to travel together. Those who now spend their nights in the forest lead their stockade-dependent friends home, see them safely inside, then head off to spend the night in the bush. Elephants don't drink through their trunks – they drink with them. A trunk can hold up to 8 litres of water in a single draw. The elephant pulls it up, then curls the trunk to release the water into the mouth. On a hot day at Voi, that sequence repeats over and over. It takes young orphans time to master. Calves are born without full trunk coordination – in their earliest weeks, many kneel at the waterhole and drink directly with their mouth. The trunk comes later, learned by watching older members of the herd. These orphans have it well and truly mastered. Step into Voi:

This handsome chap is proof that our orphans might be raised by humans, but in adulthood, this matters little to the wild elephants they encounter. Wild bulls have been arriving at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit in recent months, drawn through the Kibwezi Forest by our ex-orphans Lima Lima and the other female elephants at Umani. During their flirtations, these bulls don't seem to mind or care about our orphans' more unusual route to the wild – the 94 wild-born calves we know of are testament to this! A scorching afternoon and the elephant herd will head straight for the mud wallow (our rhinos prefer to spend it snoozing in the shade). A chilly morning and the tiny trunks want their blankets and their stables. Rain is the interesting one – sometimes it sets them off running and playing, sometimes it subdues them entirely. Fortunately, one fallen stick doesn't perturb this little imp, shuffling around and switching to 'trunk mode' to tackle a small shrub instead! Sulwe is now one of four elephants born to orphans rescued, raised, and now living in the Kibwezi Forest. A little overwhelmed, Nsimba dived for cover between her legs – his safe place. Nsimba's first ever visit to Voi was a similar story: Elephants big and small surrounded the calf with great fanfare, relishing every minute with the tiny baby.
