Shelter security tootage from kennel 7, captured at 3:47 AM. His name is Teddy. He's 8 weeks old. He was found in a cardboard box on the side of the highway with his siblings - he was the only one who survived. When he arrived at the shelter, he wouldn't stop crying for his mother. A volunteer gave him an old donated teddy bear. He hasn't let go of it since. Every night, the camera catches him doing the same thing - checking she's still there, nuzzling into her chest, licking her face. He thinks the bear is his mother. Today was our largest adoption event in twelve years. We have been planning it for six months. This morning we had thirty-two dogs. By 5pm we had one. Thirty-one dogs found homes today. It was extraordinary. It was everything we worked for. We were crying happy tears all afternoon. At 6pm I did my final walkthrough. I turned into the main corridor and I stopped. Every kennel door was open. Every kennel was empty. Except kennel 6. Walter was at his door. Face at the chain-link. Tail going. Looking out at the corridor of empty open kennels the same way he had been looking out at families all day — with his ears forward and his amber eyes warm and his tail giving the same wag he gives to everything. He does not know every other dog went home today. He knows the wag. He keeps giving the wag. I walked down that corridor to him. Thirty-one open empty kennels on either side of me. And Walter at the end of it, still wagging, still here, still completely and constitutionally Walter. He is approximately three years old. He is large. He is warm. He has never in his shelter life given anything less than his full wag to whoever was outside his kennel. Today he gave it to thirty-one families who chose other dogs. Tonight he gave it to an empty corridor. Tomorrow he will give it to whoever comes. He deserves to give it to someone who stays. Drop a ❤️ for Walter. Thomas wasn’t looking to adopt. He wasn’t even searching for a dog. He was only stopping by Riverside Animal Shelter to drop off donated supplies before heading home. But then he met Hank. Hank was a three-year-old mixed breed who had spent seven months waiting for someone to choose him. Many people had walked past him, and every time someone left, his heart broke a little more. Thomas sat with him for just a few minutes. He scratched his ears, gave him some love, and then stood up to leave. That’s when Hank reached out and grabbed his sleeve. He wasn’t trying to stop him with force. He was just scared of losing another person. His paws held onto Thomas’s arm as he quietly shook, begging without making a sound. Thomas stopped. He looked down at Hank… then sat back on the floor. The moment he did, Hank climbed into his lap, relaxed, and pressed his face into his shoulder. That was the moment Thomas knew. He called his landlord, arranged everything, and before the shelter closed that day, Hank finally had a home. Sometimes we don’t choose the dog… sometimes the dog finds us.

rewatching ep 4 for the nth time and I think this is going to be one of those scenes that stays with me for a very long time😭it isn’t just Pete crying, he completely breaks down like full sobbing, barely holding himself together, curling into a ball of grief hiding himself in the blanket like years of pain finally poured out at once. When you think about everything we know about Pete, he’s just 24, yet he’s been emotionally exhausted for years. His gang is younger than him, meaning he can’t really share anything with them. His sister neglects him, and the way he talks about his relatives makes it obvious that his family life is filled with distance rather than care😔 It’s the first time Pete has ever talked about his past, not running from it but actually saying it out loud while someone quietly listens to him. Niran doesn’t interrupt Pete or try to comfort him. He looks composed the whole time, but I can feel his emotions through the silence, the sigh, the way he listens. He is simply lying there but it’s a safe space for Pete to unravel, which is why Pete later says that people feel at ease around Niran. It’s not cuz Niran is affectionate, it’s cuz he says things as they are and that helps Pete feel like he can be himself around him, even at his most broken moment. The scene before where he was furious with Pete, he’s not judging Pete’s life, he’s just giving him the hard truth. He doesn’t sugarcoat things, but he also doesn’t invalidate Pete’s pain. Instead, he’s trying to make Pete realize that his life has value, but he’s letting anger, recklessness and negative emotions get the best of him. And for someone like Pete, who spent most of his life feeling unwanted and unseen, this kind of brutal honesty is what he needs to turn over a new leaf🥹

Hirotaka Saito, a 54-year-old businessman from Yaizu in Shizuoka, Japan, once reached a point of deep despair when his company faced crisis and he contemplated ending his life. At that moment, his beloved dog blocked the door, refusing to let him leave an act that stopped him from committing suicide and gave him a reason to live again. Moved by this unconditional love, Saito closed his company and sold his Ferrari to dedicate his life to helping other animals in need. With the funds, he established Wansfree, a rescue shelter for dogs that are abandoned, mistreated, or labeled “too difficult” to rehome, offering them food, care, and freedom. Wansfree now cares for around 40 dogs and several cats, many with traumatic pasts, and Saito dreams of expanding the facility so it can shelter up to 300 dogs by 2028, giving more animals a chance at a safe and loving life.

In his short life he's already been dealt a very sad hand and they won't hesitate to take his life.
