ELON MUSK: AI competitors should peer review each other’s models before release. “I would recommend that we at least have some sort of informal weekly or biweekly call and that there’s maybe a week or two weeks of early access by competitors. This is why I think the incentives...

Knowledge already exists. What Elon is asking is: Who has the right to it? Because they're supposedly more responsible, or because they can pay for it?

Hahaha... Elon is worried that his Grok is lagging a bit behind Astra)

The motion picture ratings system doesn't work well. Look at what a Rated R or PG movie was back in 1968 with what one is now. As society changes, so does any grading system man sets up. What was considered an A when I was going to school is much easier to obtain now in many places in the US. Look at social media as an example with the "safety" committees. It's all arbitrary based on the plans of the few who are in control.

Basically, "your rivals will snitch on you for safety" and he thinks that's great. Honestly, might work.

Sehr gut, auch der Ansatz mit Selbstkontrolle - ich hoffe dass all die Klugen Menschen rund um KI dies zum Ansporn nehmen es wirklich als Chance zu begreifen🫡😉🥰

competition can move faster when accountability moves with it.

The joy is taking up more space than my to-do list. I'm happy to make a little fuss over this.

🤖🔥 This is an interesting idea. Competitors can often spot security risks that an internal team might miss. Independent peer review before major AI releases could add another layer of accountability. 🔍⚡

yeah pre release peer review sounds nice until competitors just bury each other tbh

Great idea! An AI rating system for competitors to review

...not the worst idea. Models should peer-review other models as well.

The MPAA comparison is underrated. Movies didn’t wait for Congress to invent “PG-13.” The people who actually make the thing built the filter first. Same logic here: labs that can break a model are the ones who should see it before the public does

It’s high time Elon shall lay down the law on AI guidelines. Let’s not kid ourselves he’s the only one with ample knowledge and outlook.

considering the greater risks, why not something more formal, rigorous with protocols and oversight like NIH clinical trials for experimental medications, etc ...publishing the open source results?...are red team guidelines applicable?

Weekly calls break once shipping cadence beats review speed. Pruning happens in the gap, not after.

"informal biweekly call" labs: sure let's schedule that for q4 2027

Elon Musk says the only people qualified to police a frontier AI model are the competitors trying to beat it: "My recommendation to Demis, because I talked to him for a few hours before he published his piece, was that the most immediate thing that we could do is to have the leading AI companies at least just meet or have some sort of call once every few weeks and just discuss safety and security issues." "That's where I think the competitors can keep each other honest." "I think it's quite difficult for someone in the government who doesn't have a deep technical understanding and isn't driving the frontier of AI to know whether something should be released or not." "However, the competitors, if given sort of a week or two to review a new model, can highlight issues. All the competitors have an incentive to keep the others honest." "So you'd have a system where the model makers would check each other's work." "That would be the moment for government to step in and take action." He has a point. The people building these models are just about the only ones who can tell how dangerous one really is. A regulator who has never trained a model cannot make that call. Will rivals reviewing rivals hold up over time? Nobody knows. It has never been tried. And the alternative today is nothing. No calls between the labs, no review windows, nobody outside a lab looking at a model before it ships. So run the reviews. Even an imperfect check beats what exists now, and it would be the first real piece of the assurance layer that still has to be built. Source: Elon Musk (Elon Musk), CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, on The Economist (The Economist). P.S. That missing assurance layer is what the AI Assurance & Governance Summit 2026 is being built around. On October 1 at the Stanford Faculty Club in Palo Alto, brings frontier labs, regulated industries, insurers, investors, and researchers into one single-track room for exactly this question. Sam Altman's new interview: AI should not be designed to pursue goals that are disconnected from human needs. People must remain at the center of AI development. “I have no interest in building a super-smart AI that accomplishes some non-human goals. People should react. People should say, ‘Hey, this is what I want, and this is what I do not want.’ I do not think the issue is that we have failed to explain the benefits. We say, ‘AI is going to cure a bunch of diseases,’ and people say, ‘Okay, that is great, but that is not really my question. My question is: What is my role in the future? What is my economic future? What is my agency? How do I know that my kids and my family will still be able to have fulfilling, creative expression, struggle, drive the world forward, grow, and do this thing together in a way that has worked for a long time?’ When people in AI say, ‘Sure, there are going to be no jobs,’ or ‘50% of jobs are going to go away,’ or ‘90% of jobs are going to go away,’ and ‘AI is going to be smarter than you at everything,’ and ‘We will give you some basic income, but you are not really going to have a role,’ that is horrible. And by the way, if an AI company says, ‘Maybe we are going to destroy all the jobs, and we will be the most valuable company in the world,’ people should look at you like, ‘Yeah, that is a terrible message.’ I do not think the problem is that we have not articulated the upsides. I think people actually believe us. They hear, ‘AI may cure your cancer,’ and they think, ‘That sounds great.’ I think we, as an industry, have failed to explain how people stay in control of determining the future at every step, and how people can still have a meaningful life in all the ways we care about.” ---- From "CNBC Television" YouTube channel, (link in comment)
