A lot of times for any given thing, you have to say, ‘Did you try?’ This may sound obvious, but actually try. Somebody might wonder, ‘Can I be innovative?’ Well, have you tried? Very few cars are all aluminum. In the aerospace industry, that’s the default. So it seemed like obviously the right move to minimize the non-battery-pack mass of the car. In order to offset a fairly heavy battery pack, we had to make the rest of the car light, but still achieve a five-star safety rating. I don’t think it would have been possible to do that if we had used steel, which is the traditional method.” And then for SpaceX, Elon explains: “The car industry is really good at making complicated objects at a low cost. I mean it’s actually quite incredible that one can buy a decent car for $20,000. It’s nutty how much stuff is in a car. So at SpaceX, I hired a bunch of people from the auto industry to run manufacturing, which has worked out reasonably well.”

How much of your life are you sick? For the average person, not that much.” “How much of your life would you like to feel better? Sleep better? Have more muscles?” “If you had something that added muscle mass annually in your 60s - that’s another GLP-1. That’s a multi-trillion-dollar drug. Do you read a lot of books but feel like nothing in your life has changed? If so do this: Every time you finish a chapter, write down 1 key lesson you learned and apply it within the week. Keep it simple and aim to apply one lesson at a time. Trying to apply too many lessons at once can get overwhelming and cause you to give up on all of them. And then pursue that. That’s also a good way to determine if something’s far from its optimum.” He gives rockets as an example: “You could reason by analogy and say the rocket is going to cost a certain amount because that’s what prior rockets have cost. Or you can say, well, what is a rocket made of? What are the material constituents? What do they weigh? What’s the cost per unit mass? And that sets the limit asymptotically for what a rocket can be. So if you can figure out some creative way to rearrange those elements into a rocket shape, then you can achieve a much better outcome.” He also thinks combining ideas from different industries is really helpful for innovation: “What have people discovered in one industry and can that be applied to other industries?
