Elon Musk had previously mentioned that SpaceX will only attempt to retrieve the ship after two flawless soft landings in the ocean. If we have a perfect soft landing tomorrow, the earliest we can see this magic catch will be Flight 14. 🚀

Elon Musk: We'll try to catch the ship once we get through the high heating of reentry reliably. “There's recovering and reusing the ship. I think we will want to have at least two consecutive successes of a given design that lands at a specific point in the ocean, or smash into a specific point in the ocean, before we try to bring it back to the launch site. We do not want to rain debris over Mexico or the US. My guess is probably next year [in 2025] is when we will be able to reuse Starship. But I think it's highly likely that this year we will bring the ship side of it to a controlled point in the ocean and have it basically land on a virtual tower somewhere in the Pacific or the Indian Ocean. Just another reminder since Starship’s 13th test flight was pushed to today: If you see Starship land softly in the ocean later today, and then blow up after tipping over, that’s completely normal. It actually means the flight has succeeded! After a couple of perfect splashdowns in the ocean, SpaceX will catch the ship with a tower back on land, just like they did the booster.

Elon Musk: Sometimes things blow up — not always by accident. We intentionally push Starship beyond what it would ever face in a normal flight. We even removed heat shield tiles from the worst possible spots just to see if it could survive. It did — traveling from Texas to the Indian Ocean in about 40 minutes and still managing a soft landing.
