Elon Musk: Consciousness is rare and fleeting. We must become multiplanetary to protect it. “The Universe is about 13.8 billion years old. Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. If you consider that civilization has only been around for a little over 5,000 years, all of human civilization is basically the blink of an eye. It's just a fraction, it's nothing. That probably means that consciousness is incredibly rare and perhaps fleeting. It may not last for very long because otherwise I think we would have seen aliens, some kind of sign of aliens. I think the most likely explanation is that consciousness is rare. Does that consciousness actually extend to another planet? Does that consciousness extend to another star system? Ultimately, if we're able to become a space-faring civilization, a multiplanet species, and ultimately a multistellar species, and go out there and explore all these star systems, I think we may find that there are many long-dead one-planet civilizations. There's always some chance of something going wrong on Earth. Overall, I'm like fairly optimistic about Earth. Let's just say there's a 1% chance, for argument's sake of life as we know it and consciousness being annihilated on Earth. I think it's still, even if there's just a 1% chance of civilizational annihilation, you'd want to protect against that by having a second planet back up the biosphere effectively and ensure the continuity of life and consciousness.
