Elon Musk says working will be "optional" soon. Robots and AI will eliminate non-physical jobs, creating a "Universal High-Income" where everyone gets what they want. But a Yale paper shows the economics behind his prediction are far more brutal than he suggests. I'm talking about the paper titled "We... Won't Be Missed." It concludes: "Half the workforce could stop working tomorrow and GDP wouldn't budge." i.e. humans become economically meaningless. The paper splits all work into two categories: 1) Bottleneck work This work is essential for growth. Energy production, logistics, scientific discovery, and infrastructure. The economy cannot grow unless this work scales. 2) Accessory work It's non-essential. Arts, hospitality, therapy, and fine dining. It's nice to have, but not required for growth. AGI systematically takes over everything that's mission-critical. Some accessory work stays human, not because AGI can't do it, but because we have surplus workers and it's not worth the compute. In other words, your future salary will be based on the computational cost of replicating your work. As compute gets exponentially cheaper, your wage ceiling plummets. The economy grows, productivity increases, but your value is tied to declining tech costs. Yale's paper concluded: Labor's share of GDP converges to zero. All income flows to owners of computational resources. The transition speed determines how painful this gets. If technology develops faster than computing scales, we get jagged disruption, with some workers receiving huge premiums before crashing. If compute scales faster, we get gradual, predictable decline in wages. In my opinion, there is a paradox that Musk missed here. Work being "optional" is an illusion. Humans need work, maybe not for survival, but for purpose. To be a successful founder, you have to believe that what you're working on is going to work — despite knowing it probably won't! That sounds like an oxymoron, but it's really not. Believing that what you're building is going to work is an essential component of coming to work with the energy, fortitude, and determination it's going to require to even have a shot. Knowing it probably won't is accepting the odds of that shot. It's simply the reality that most things in business don't work out. At least not in the long run. Most businesses fail. If not right away, then eventually. Yet the world economy is full of entrepreneurs who try anyway. Not because they don't know the odds, but because they've chosen to believe they're special. The best way to balance these opposing points — the conviction that you'll make it work, the knowledge that it probably won't — is to do all your work in a manner that'll make you proud either way. If it doesn't work, you still made something you wouldn't be ashamed to put your name on. And if it does work, you'll beam with pride from making it on the basis of something solid. The deep regret from trying and failing only truly hits when you look in the mirror and see Dostoevsky staring back at you with this punch to the gut: "Your worst sin is that you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing." Everybody is ultra competent and the reason everybody is ultra competent is because if they're not Elon Musk sniffs it out and fires them. Elon knows because he's talking to the people actually doing the work. At this point having done this for 25 years he can sniff this out really quickly. The best engineers in the world want to work for him because he's the one CEO who’s able to work with them as a peer on whatever the technology is. What would be better as an engineer than being able to design a rocket engine with Elon Musk as your engineering partner?”

Fewer workers every year means the economy only grows if output per head grows fast, and the engine for that is the Exponential Age... AI and robotics doing the work people used to. But all of that runs on energy. So the cost of energy is the ceiling on the whole thing. That's why the EU, Japan, China, the US and the UK are all moving at the same time. If we can take the cost of energy to near zero, GDP per capita stops being hostage to the price of a barrel of oil. That's the way out of this mess.

Barry Sternlicht recently gave a VERY insightful interview about tariffs and what it means for real estate prices - what he said is troubling: "The promotion of American manufacturing is a great idea, but we are not a manufacturing nation... We only have 13 million jobs of 160 million in manufacturing, and we're running a 4% unemployment rate. So I'm not sure who's going to work in all these factories. We're going to need some really quick efforts from Musk and Zuckerberg in robotics to actually build, have people work in these factories. Americans don't want to do that. That's not the jobs that they're interested in taking today... I think the tariffs are super complicated... I do think the focus should be on China. We run a $250 billion trade deficit with China... China is [the] second largest economy in the world with a fixed currency. And that alone is not right. That currency should go up and down with trade flows like every other major currency. So you start there. And I don't think the tariffs are tactical. And the if you put them in place, as [Trump] just did with steel tariffs, American companies will raise prices. So it is very inflationary. And for real estate, it's really bad. [For example] we need [Canada's] lumber. Or we can chop down our own trees but it's a bad thing. We run an equal trade deficit with Canada other than oil but we use their oil... if we don't buy it, they're going to ship it to Asia. For existing owners [of real estate], it's good because to build a new building will be more expensive. So the existing office stock, the existing apartment stock is going to be worth more. But it's bad because the numbers won't work to create new [buildings]. You won't be able to build anything. We already have a four to five million unit housing shortage... And you're seeing it in the sentiment of the builders that they're nervous. Everyone's a little nervous."
